ID help needed. Beswick Duck wall pocket ?
Question:
I found this pair of ducks yesterday at a garage sale. First thing I saw was the ducks, when I picked them up I thought...wow, cool...wall pockets...and then I saw the Beswick on the back, and really thought I have a treasure So I been researching them, and all I can find is Beswick duck mallard plaques....4 sizes of them. These say Beswick ware, Made in England. Larger one is almost 6" at it's widest points, does have crazing, and would be perfect except for 2 breaks ...one at the neck, and one at the feet. It has been reattached , and looks okay, but maybe could be fixed better by a professional pottery person. The plaques have a hole in the back where it faces the wall. These do not have that. The opening is in between the wings, and maybe almost an inch in the bigger one. The smaller one looks to be in wonderful condition. Just the crazing. I have searched completed auctions and just cannot find any listings for a beswick mallard wall pocket. Guess I better get a picture took of these.....huh ? I also have a wall pocket book, and saw lots of duck wall pockets, but nothing in the beswick line. So what do I have ? Thanks Patti Answer: Here is the picture album I just made of the pair. http://imageevent.com/ladytoysdream/...?rotp=4533&n=0 Answer: Here's an old ebay auction: (don't know if it's the same duck or not) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3707493780&category=12 521 Answer: Hi Patti. I don't think these are wall pockets since I don't see a pocket to place the water, plant or flowers. They look like wall plaques: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...5724874 &rd=1 Google search results for Beswick duck plaques: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...=Google+Search Blanche Answer: Hi Fountainhouse and Blanche. Thank you for the ideas Later on today, I am going to add a few more pictures of these ducks taken in outside light so one can see the opening in their back between their wings better. I still think these are wall pockets...and/or I really hope they are Answer: Difficult to say, but in photo #2, it DOES look like there may be an oval opening there for, say, flowers. Then again, it could just be a shadow. Answer: Hi Kathleen...yes pic 2 shows the opening but it is too dark a picture. I was finally able to get a couple better pics this afternoon. I just added them to the same album. This time they show the openings a lot better. You can click on those pictures to make them a lot bigger. Maybe I should have lightened the second one a bit more. Now my question is..... I think these would be an uncommon item ..... and could someone give me a idea of value ? And or a starting bid for them when I get them put up on ebay. Thanks http://imageevent.com/ladytoysdream/beswickmallards?n=0 Answer: Oh geez, why can't I ever find Beswicks at garage sales? Anyway, even though I am somewhat green with envy at this time, perhaps I can be of some help. My Beswick book states these are model #596, Mallard. They are listed in the section on bird wall plaques. However, there is a note at the bottom of the page which states that these also exist with a small pocket between the wings. Nothing is stated as to if the "pocket" version is more rare that the "plaque" version. They came in two color combos: 1. Brown, teal green and white-gloss 2. White with yellow beaks-matt. You've obviously got the gloss ones. Beswick made these in 5 sizes, measured by height.I'm going to guess that you have either the 596/3 Gloss (7" in height) or the 596/4 Gloss (5 3/4" in height.) You might also look for an encised mark on the back, as Beswick encised the model # on many of their pieces. (I couldn't tell from your photos.) Oh, and these were made from 1938-1971. My price guide is from 1994, so the values stated are not neccessarily going to be anything like you might get today. But, FWIW, value is stated as $55.00 U.S. for the 596/4 and $70.00 for the 596/3. BJ Answer: I think some people are calling these Beswick Mallard wall pockets "wall plaques". I found a Beswick collector's website which has a picture of a mallard wall pocket but she calls it a wall plaque. She even shows a picture of the pocket between the wings. Maybe some of these wall plaques were made with pockets and some weren't? Anyway, I can't find a price but she says the number of the one shown is #586. http://members.tripod.com/~BeswickQuarterly/page5.htm Look for #586 Mallard Wall Plaque under the Other Animals... section. Blanche Edited to add I just saw BJ's post and she's the expert on Beswick. Waving "hi" to BJ who helped me identfy a Beswick horse a few years ago. Answer: Thanks for the info BJ These are the first beswick that I can remember ever having my hands on. I remembered a post on here about a beswick item, and it stayed in the back of my mind Just a unadvertised garage sale, and I rarely look at knick knacks anymore and not even sure what caught my attention on that table. But I was pretty sure I had me a winner And I never caught the damage on the one piece until I had it in the truck, and was wrapping it in bubble wrap. I learned a long time ago, to carry some sort of wrapping stuff, as I had a piece of pottery roll off the seat one day. Luckily I was able to save it.....whew The url for the pictures, I have updated under some of the pics with more info. Copyright ? 2006 - 2007 www.thankhealth.com Privacy Policy
