Anyone know this mark?
Question:
This is a really nice majolica platter, but I can't find the mark....anyone know it?????? Answer: Well, I certainly cannot make out the writing on the mark. Since you can see it better, what do you think it reads? BTW, I've looked in my two Majolica books and did not find the mark. Answer: Elizabeth, I see most of a cup, inside there is a Z-with the bottom stroke under ells- and underneath that EN-maybe a D before that. Thanks for looking in the books for me. Answer: Thanks to Old Stuff I think it has been identified as G. Zells. Now, does anyone know anything about this company? I googled and only found a majolica plate and tile, but nothing further in the way of information. Answer: Your mark is mark number 2014 in Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain by Robert E. Rontgen, 1997. Page 249 - (Shows the mark) Georg Schmider Zell on Harmersbach 1907 - 1928 on earthenware also in combination with: BADEN So that must read BADEN beneath the cup. Page 507 - (Provides a little information) Zell on Harmersbach Badenia, Germany Georg Schmider United Zell Ceramic Factories, 1907 - present. The company is still property of the Schmider family. During the first years, the factory produced light colored earthenware and over-proof cooking utensils, later household and table earthenware. After 1842, household, table and hotel porcelain, coffee and tea sets and mocha cups were produced besides earthenware. Today main products are table and decorative earthenware. I was going to type the entire page of all the company changes (since I type 1842 up there), but decided to do a search and look what I found. Seems that all the information you need is listed there. http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/ah_antique_...396242,00.html Answer: Thank you, thank you, thank you...........you have saved me untold hours of research, as I might never have found this. I need to learn to search better, do you mind telling me what search engine and words you used????? Answer: Elizdale ..... you are simply amazing! Answer: Not really Dove, but thanks! Google is what is amazing to me. Cariad, I used "Georg Schmider" on google.com. But, before I learned the name, I looked in the index of the book I mentioned up there to find Zell and there was nothing. So, I looked in the index of Kovels' New Dictionary and found Zell on Harmersbach which BTW is mark # 29K and the Germany was West Germany then. I wondered why the original book I mentioned didn't have anything on Zell, because it is a more in-depth and more expensive book, so I looked again for Georg Schmider and there was lots of information. BTW, "Zell on Harmersbach" is actually a city in Germany. Good luck on that piece. Copyright ? 2006 - 2007 www.thankhealth.com Privacy Policy
