Do you recognize this mark, or pattern?
Question:
I got a full set of china at a yard sale over the weekend. The bottoms on several pieces is marked USA in raised letters. Here's a pic of the mark, and a pic of the pattern. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Answer: It reminds me of the Viriginia Rose pattern, which was put out by numerous companies with variations on the theme of the Viriginia roses, with that creamy color and arching and scrolling lines. Homer Laughlin called it Virginia Rose, but many companies made the design with that flower. edited to add: yours isn't HL, because they have a different stamp. Answer: That's the Mildred pattern. You'll do well with that set, especially if you have the butter dish and some of the serving pieces and bowls. It was made by Mt. Clemens Pottery of Mt. Clemens, Michigan, in the 1930s. This pattern was sold in dime stores during the 1930s. I think Mt. Clemens continued to make the pieces until they closed in 1987, but cannot be positive of that. I've noticed that some of the pieces look newer than others do. The pattern name, "Mildred" was given to the pattern by collectors. Answer: Thank you !! You are just a walking encyclopedia of glass/pottery?china knowledge!! I got kthe whole set for $3.00 at a yard sale. I debated buying it, because I know NOTHING about this sort of thing. Then I figured, what the heck, someone at here will help me out! And I was right! Thank you again! Answer: elizdale - You are a fount of knowledge on pottery and ceramics! I've tried to spend some time in this forum, but time is not something I have a lot of lately. I'd been meaning to write back to you re: the 'name that pottery' game thread we were playing one night - I had put up some old stoneware coasters with the Monmouth, IL maple leaf mark on the backs, and you said you'd weren't familiar with the mark as it was on those pieces. I meant to get back to you about them: I had found the info on variations on the Monmouth maple leaf on a pottery web site ages ago, but of course now I don't know where the wweb site was. I've always assumed it was a genuine mark, as it's similar to their maple leaf, and there's really no reason why someone would purposely make a knock-off of those pieces, as they aren't worth anything to speak of. If I find the site again, I'll post a link! thanks, Michelle Answer: Thanks lorra15433 and Michelle. You give me too much credit. I honestly don't know that much. I have lots of books that I research or I have already research many of the items because I have sold an identical of those same items. Everything I learned was on the boards. Before eBay, I knew a few depression glass patterns and that's about it. But, thanks for the compliments anyway. Michelle, I always lose links or the links go bye-bye. Hopefully, you will find that link someday. I agree, who would want to produce knock-offs of that mark. Copyright ? 2006 - 2007 www.thankhealth.com Privacy Policy
