Any help with Padua Hills Pottery?
Question:
I have googled and researched but all I can find is this http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache...ua+hills&hl=en
Although my pictures aren't that good, I think this rabbit is one of the nicest pieces of mid-century pottery I have seen. I am wondering if it is anything worthwhile, as some of the great names of that period were apparantly connected in some way with Padua Hills. The signature looks like Hilliard to me, but I can't find anything and all my books are related to Roseville, McCoy, etc. I have nothing specific to the California Potteries.
Opinions or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Answer:
Nothing in my California Pottery, 2 ed. book by Jack Chipman.
Answer:
Cariad-
That looks like Paqua to me, not Padua. A quick search for "Paqua Pottery" brought an huge list of results. Seems Paqua was a Hopi Indian known as Frog Woman who was the first to do white slip ware ( from memory) LOTS of results bring up galleries with items from her daughter, daughter-in-law-grandchildren etc.
You may want to try that. Also got results for a town named Paqua in Ohio where a lot of the big potteries were.
Sorry- couldn't find anything specific. Just a fast search in between listings ( I needed a break )
Good Luck
Answer:
Hi Denise,
I would've been thrilled to have it be a piece by Frogwoman or any of the southwest/west potters. However,The upstroke on the d is very faint in the pics, but looking under a loop, I am 99% certain it is Padua. Also, I used to collect Indian pottery and the glaze is very different than that used by the pueblo potteries that I have seen or owned.
