Absent Romeo
Question:
I've got a squarish (with rounded twiddly corners) plate in the Shakespeare series, D3596. It's backstamped lion without crown (1920s), and says Romeo on the back. On the front is a scene with columns and foliage. So far, so good. But Romeo has wandered off somewhere (possibly behind the columns.....). There's just a big blank space in the middle. The glaze is there - Romeo hasn't been erased by someone. Did Doulton sell off seconds, or did this one slip through the net somehow? And why are all the Shakespeare series plates I can find on the net round and not square? Answer: This question I know I can't answer but I would love to know the definition of 'twiddly' because I don't have a clue. lol Answer: Something like this (my camera's misbehaving so I've had to pinch this one from someone...). Obviously this is from a different series, but it's something like the shape. Answer: Talking today with someone in the trade (same one as in the Crown B and Sparkler post). He reckons Doulton didn't sell seconds, but that people from the factory took mistakes like this home themselves. Says it's probably worth more than a normal one!
