Help !!! Need Maker Name Of Vase
Question:
IM TRYING TO FIND OUT WHO MADE THIS VASE I FOUND AT A LOCAL GOODWILL STORE, ANY INFO WOULD BE GREAT..THANKS http://hometown.aol.com/peaceladydv2/page39.html
Answer:
OK. Anything at all on the underside? Always helps to know - even if there's nothing there!
(By the way - the plants are NOT bulrushes, they are reed mace. Unfortunately, many people do call them bulrushes. Rushes (including bulrushes) are a member of the grass family, reed mace isn't. So they could be listed as either epending on the site....)
Answer:
and how do bulrushes or reed mace compare to 'cattails'? (which is what most folks around here would call these)
Answer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullrush
Looks like wikipedia is saying that bulrushes and reed mace are the same thing. But maybe they need a correction?
Answer:
It's one of those things like spelling 'thank you' as 'thankyou'. It's crept in and it's very hard to make it go away again. Cattails is a legit name for them, but bulrush isn't, because there is already a thing called a bulrush. (And Moses probably wasn't hidden in them, either, but that's another story...) And this ain't getting this vase identified. Looks first half of 20th C to me. Lots of firms made stuff like this, which is why I want to know if there's anything on the underside. Shape looks influenced by Art Deco - the handles and that rather interesting base.
Answer:
The vase is not marked on bottom but looks like it had a round sticker on it at one time. It stands 8" tall
Answer:
Unmarked pottery is usually pre McKinley Act or modern craft pottery. And there are so many craft potteries. Unless someone recognises the vase, we'vr nothing much to go on. A sticker could be a price tag, of a maker's mark. Unusual for it to be a maker's mark, though. Potters like to have their mark more permanent - except perhaps for mass-produced Chinese export stuff where it's the quantity that counts. This doesn't look like that sort of style. It's not 'cheap and cheerful' enough. That colour mix is saying something to me, but I can't make out what....
Answer:
Found this pic..but no info:

My first guess was Brush McCoy...but I can't remember if they ever used a sticker. 2nd guess would be like Royal Copeland or Royal Haeger.
Answer:
Weller?
Answer:
Knew I'd seen reed mace on something recently. It's in a cupboard in my kitchen. A brown above sort of off-cream jug with a medieval-looking couple on the side against a background of reed mace. And it's got no darned mark on the darned thing! The handle looks as if it's supposed to be some sort of vegetation. Could well be from the same place. Trouble is, I've no idea at all where my jug came from. It could have been in the family for generations, or part of stock-in-trade from about 15 years ago....
