Help needed with this St-Gaudens' pottery...
Question:
Can anyone give me any information or opinions on this vase I picked up in a NYC antique shop. The Mark on the bottom reads: Paul St-Gaudens Brooklyn 1923
I've asked around at some antiques shows in NY area and no one knows of his work... It's a BEAUTIFUL piece though. Excellently executed with a wonderful drip glaze application.
IGoogle returned these sites:

Thanks for the fix.
I broght the vase to a local antique show today and a gentleman was doing appraisals for 5.00 an item. He seemed to be unfarmiliar with the artist but thought that maybe this was really rare stuff. He thought due to the unfamiliarity people may have it would bring maybe 350.00 to 400.00 but for a historical society like the Brooklyn Historical Society or the Long Island Society, he could see it bringing 1000.00.
I was showing it around the show, and a retired dealer in the business for 40 years said thought that it was Newcomb at first. But, in his opinion it was a Newcomb contemporary. He thought it could be something really scarce.
Again, any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Email David Rago.

Answer:
A pitcher by him (below) was estimated at $1500 - 2000 on http://www.liveauctioneers.com/aucti...ay/709450.html
He also painted in oils. In 1923, he'd be early twenties, his dates being 1900-1954. From the dates of his father, he would have to be a nephew. His father was Louis, who was born six years after Augustus. The Orchard Kiln pottery was founded in 1921 and ran to 1944, so this is a reasonably early piece that you have.

Great... thanks for the info!
Any other info or opinions greatly appreciated.
Answer:
Great if it's authentic...but begs the question: why didn't the antique dealer know what it is and what it is worth ????? I mean...it IS signed and all.
Frankly, antique dealers in New York City usually KNOW what they have!
You really need to take it to a professional to get documented/certified.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.
