Answer:
What do the words on the bottom say?
Answer:
the date reads 1888... The words are very difficult to make out. Looks like: C.H. Ryaia???? then third word looks like Baruia or Baruna .....
Answer:
Baruna is the Balinese God of the Ocean, while Baruia is a place in Bangladesh. The Balinese connection looks better to me, but I can't find any connection to artistic pottery with either, nor with Ryaia. The decoration looks hand applied rather than moulded, to judge by the slight irregularities in the shapes of the leaves. It's possible that this pot came from what was then the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), or that the Baruna name applies to a pattern. But on Google Images there's no sign of pottery when searching for Baruna.
Answer:
Would it be possibly to put some sort of dark powder in the letters on the base so they will stand out on a photo? Coffee or cocoa should do the trick and be easily removed afterwards. Or if the letters are under the glaze, a washable felt-tip could be used. Powder is better, and don't use felt-tip if the letters are incised through any glaze. Even if it's washable, it'll get absorbed into the pot without glaze to stop it.
Answer:
It's extremely doubtful that those numbers are the actual date it was made.
What makes you think it is that old? Where did you get it?
Please post clear (daylight) close-ups pics of the inside, complete bottom with sig, and a close up of the glaze and incised designs....no flash please.

I'm curious platinum, why would you think that the date inscribed is not the actual date it was made? I picked it up at a flea market in NY for 10.00.
Phil: I'll try the coffee (I drink enough of it anyway ). I'll post more pics tonight.
