Please help with this vase.
Question:
The mark is impossible to read (seriously). The inside is glazed. The outside is not, except for the enamel. The design is either Sgrafitto or Intaglio (engraved). I really think this affect is Sgrafitto because sometimes a sgrafitto design is filled in with color. Then there is the Bisque Ware. Parian is unglazed porcelain (bisque ware) intended to resemble marble. Also, the enamel decorations, are they considered overglazed decorations? OK, I do know what the Greek Key design is around the top. Yeah, something I know. There is quite a few pops on the yellow glaze. And there is lots of crazing on the inside and bottom. Does this look familiar to anyone? I have tried everything to see the mark including pensil rubbings. Anyone know the maker and/or age? Any help would be appreciated. enamel-greek-key-vase.jpg enamel-greek-key-vase-4.jpg enamel-greek-key-vase-3.jpg enamel-greek-key-vase-mark.jpg enamel-greek-key-vase-1a.jpg Answer: It's not Clarice Cliff, but there are shades of some of her work there. It's a sort of mix of Art Nouveau and a touch of Deco. That Greek key looks hand cut, but the foliage or whatever could be moulded. Have you tried the powdered coffee trick with the mark? Answer: I really like that thing, whatever it is... How large is it? Answer: Phil, I see the resemblance to some of Clarice Cliff's work, but it's definitely not hers. I have never heard of the powered coffee trick. The mark is of two rings with words within the outer ring and in the center of the central ring, there is either a C, U, or 11. Elaine, it is 6" tall by 6 1/2" in diameter. I like it too. That's why I haven't sold it in the 4 years that I've had it. Answer: I think Phil mentioned this in some other thread. You dust/sift cocoa or fine ground coffee over the mark. Maybe tap the piece to settle the dark powder? Hope to be able to see something you couldn't see with a rubbing. Anyhow, I think that's what he meant... (don't use it on anything that might stain or hold the powder) Answer: I have a vase that's very similar. Might the impressed mark on yours say "Amphora" or "Czechoslovakia"? Answer: Thanks, that one is really close. During the past 4 years, I've run across the word, "Amphora" and wondered if the vase was that type. This design on this on eBay is similar. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=170030516545 I seriously cannot make out the mark, even with the coffee. Below are some images that I've adjusted and turned to see if I could read the mark, but I cannot. I'd be surprised if any of you could read this mark, but I'd be thrilled if you could. The far right one has some similarities to your mark, especially the C shape that's formed from the top of the bottle (I guess that's what it is) But the Amphora mark doesn't seem related. "# Marked: "Amphora" in a Circle. (1905-1910) # Marked: With the Amphora Crown (1892-1910)" There is some sort of glaze on the background on those ebay Amphora pieces. Answer: http://cgi.ebay.com/Fabulous-Turn-Au...QQcmdZViewItem Did you see this one? http://cgi.ebay.com/Pair-EARLY-Austr...QQcmdZViewItem A site mentioned in an auction http://contact.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI...lerQuestion_VI comment: http://www.porcelainmarksandmore.com...plitz_1/00.php Answer: Elaine, neither the one I linked to, nor the one you linked to have a glaze on the background. They just have a different color effect in the bisque ware. The glaze and crazing on the mark of this vase has destroyed the mark if it were ever good in the first place. Maybe one of the heatings caved the mark in. There just seems to be hills and valleys in this mark. Yes, I saw the Amphora mark. The circle mark (1903 - 1918) could be this mark. http://www.collectorscircle.com/bohe...1.html#amphora So what do you think? Copyright ? 2006 - 2007 www.thankhealth.com Privacy Policy
