help with identification - bowl from Japan
Question:
Any suggestions on how to list this bowl from Japan would be appreciated. This comes from my MILs stash... so it was likely acquired in southeastern Ontario or western NY. It is definitely pre-80s... likely 50's or earlier. It measures approx 7 1/4 inches across. The bottom simply says "Japan". The edges are about 2 1/4" above the table surface. It appears to have "sticker" flowers; the basic shape has been made from an interesting scalloped blank with 2 small openings on one side; it has gold edges; and has an iridescent glow everywhere except on the gold and the flowers. Do you see any unique sign here that points to a specific maker? Answer: Have you looked at www.gotheborg.com? I think I've seen that mark there. Look at Nippon Yoko Boeki Co http://www.gotheborg.com/marks/index_jap_marks.htm Lou Answer: http://www.gotheborg.com/marks/index_jap_marks.htm not quite half way down. Nippon Yoko Boeki ? Answer: Great Minds Think Alike... (and I'm sure not including myself in that...) but I do think the stickers are decals... Answer: Originally Posted by goodworks1 but I do think the stickers are decals... What are you saying Elaine? Take a loop and see if there are lots of dots in the design. If so, they are decals. If not, for me, it's usually hand painted. The iridescent is usually called luster glaze. Do a search on Moss Rose. Do a search on Lemon Server / Lemon Dish. This bowl may be too deep, but I'm not certain. Answer: I have nothing to add but I do think the bowl is beautiful. Answer: I guess Joanne will have to be the one who figures out how the flowers got on the plate. I've never seen that plate (except in the photos here) Answer: I've been off-line for awhile due to ds staying home from school yesterday (sick) and today all the schools are closed for a snow holiday!! Just wish we were getting some snow! Nippon Yoko Boeki Yes. That is the mark, exactly. You-all are amazing! Take a loop and see if there are lots of dots in the design. a loop? a look? I have added 2 detail photos... one from the Shumann bowl that I brought here earlier (I have upgraded my camera) and one from this Nippon bowl. They have different types of dots/bubbles. Perhaps it is handpainted (not stickers). Where there is color, the finish is rough. In between leaves and flowers (no extra color), it is smooth. But the four smaller roses & leaves are SOOO exactly the same. thanks, joanne Answer: loop=jeweler's loop to get REALLY close lol.
