French, English, etc. etc. Sometimes You Just Wanna Scream!
Question:
Hi Everyone! I am So Frustrated. * I bought this covered vegetable bowl(tureen?) thinking that it was Haviland or Limoges. I am Still not clear on what is Limoges. Well, enough of that. My wanting to scream episode comes from two weeks of searching, buying books and posting in different forums, all in the hopeless effort of finding out who's mark (backstamp) this is! I am only posting pictures of the marks and not of the bowl itself because I am not sure if you need one? The first picture is a shot of the marks that are inside the lid. The other two pictures are of the backstamp, (from hell) that is driving me ... Nuts! (one is a closeup) I started out searching for "Royal Porcelain", Big Mistake. That doesn't seem to be the name of one company but of Hundreds of companies! I can't even make out what the Big letters in the circle say or the little letters at the bottom. Maybe its French? * The bowl Looks like your typical Haviland with the little roses and all But .. It seems that Thousands of companies ripped of this design .. From someone? Thank You Everyone .. For your patience and I hope for your help in .. Keeping The Rest My Hair Intact! During your research, did anyone mention "The Glasgow Pottery, Trenton, NJ." In Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks: Pottery & Porcelain, 1850 to the Present, it appears to be mark 102c. Glasgow Pottery (John Moses & Co.)Trenton, NJ, USAToilet & Table warecirca 1900Company in business from 1859 - 1906. In Kovel's Dictionary of Marks: Pottery & Porcelain, 1650 to 1850, it appears to be 203e, circa 1875. Beneath the circle, could that be J. M. & Co. or J.M. & S Co.? The Glasgow Pottery - John Moses (an Irish immigrant) in 1863 established this pottery which quickly became one of the largest and most successful in Trenton. For the Centennial celebrations, Glasgow produced a variety of commemorative teacups and saucers for which it is well known. Many organizations sponsored fund raising activities centered on the 100th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party that featured Glasgow cups and saucers. The pottery continued in operation until shortly after the death of Moses in 1902 at which time the plant was acquired by the Maddock Company. Once again, welcome to here. Answer: Elizabeth! Thank You "So Much" for your help! It is funny how things work out sometimes. You asked if anyone had mentioned John Moses and sons in my search? Just before I came here today, I had two folks give me separate answers to my question .. one gave me the same answer as you did while the other says that it is Staffordshire and is a company by the name of John Maddock and Sons. (Think I will go with your answer) If you would like, I can post a picture of the piece later? Again, I can't Thank You enough for your help! Paul Answer: You're welcome Paul. I always like to see the items that I try to identify, so that it will refresh my memory if the question comes up again. So, post your picture if you wish. Yup, that is funny about the Moses and Maddock connection that you got earlier. Where are these other Pottery Boards? I don't venture out too far and didn't know there were any others, but I suppose they are all over the place. Don't be a stranger. Answer: Hi again Elizabeth! I also go to www.auctionbytes.com A lot of different categories as well as Ebay and auction forums. Here are some pictures of the porcelain piece that was driving me nuts!
