Does this work have a name???
Question:
Yoohoo! It's me again with another question to prove how very, very little I know about needle arts. This hankie has white stitching around the flowers and leaves which give a dimensional effect-much like the flower designs on cutwork. does this have a name?? Answer: Is it a rolled edge (applique)? Or is that appliqued lace? or just an outline stitch/satin stitch on one piece of fabric or what? I can't see the stitches... (old eyes...) Oh, and how large is this thing? A handkerchief, scarf, tablecloth? What fiber? cotton? linen? silk? Elaine Answer: Hi Elaine, it is a hanky-14" linen I think. Applique is extra material added right??, this is not, it's more like a stitch around the edges/outline-Very tiny rolled stitches.(would that be a rolled edge?) Answer: So there's only ONE layer of fabric over the whole hankie? No place where there's two layers (like the white flowers)? Is there cording inside where the satin stitching is? (to help raise the line up?) Answer: Yes, just one layer of material. I'm not sure what/how I would tell if there is cording, but the stitches do have depth, just like the rolled edge of a hanky does. To show how little I know, I thought satin stitches were long, these are very tiny stitches, like little "nubs".........am I making any sense? Answer: Can you post a close up of the stitches? That would be helpful. Joan Answer: I was able to get a better pic than I thought Answer: Cariad, Thanks for the closer photo. What does the back took like? (where the stitching is) The same as the front? Or do you just see the crosswise stitches? I'm thinking this may be a thread/cord that is couched down to the face of the hankie, more or less following the outline of the print. I'm not sure that this is much help though, as I don't know a name for that technique. Have you found anything like it for sale on ebay or anywhere? Elaine Answer: Hi Elaine, You see the same stitches but they aren't as "thick" in the back......not as dimensional. I couldn't find anything like it because I couldn't think of a word to search on...............and I got tired after looking at about 450-give or take a few- of 20,542 Hankies on ebay. Right now my inclination is that it won't be worth listing cause it'll never be found, among the 52,578 hankies now posted, by someone who might like it.......and all because I couldn't find that elusive keyword. Answer: My first thought was also that the outline was couched but I've decided that it's the enlarged close-up that makes it look that way. The more I think about it the more I'm inclined to think that the design is simply outlined with a tiny padded machine made satin stitch. LOL...but I could be wrong again! Anyway, it's a lovely hankie. Joan Copyright ? 2006 - 2007 www.thankhealth.com Privacy Policy
