I had that auction on my watch list and forgot about it!
Anyway, I think the background color makes a big difference. Any pastel will almost always do better than white. I also think the Goldielocks fabric is just "cuter" which is what attracts the Japanese bidders. Cute animals are very popular right now and will usually do better than prints with humans in them. The first auction had a couple Japanese bidders and the second one didn't have any.
But that's just my guess. I actually liked the second print quite a bit...it reminds me of Mary Engelbreit stuff.
