ID'ing this fabric..
Question:
I have this fabric, which is all cotton. I 'think' the red & white is feedsack. Large pieces, but not enough to measure selvedge. Any guess-timates on age by design?

Answer:
Tina,
I have a piece of #2 above. I also have a piece of the same print in a brown/peach/green colorway. It's about 42" wide and was from a series of fabrics that were some of the first late 30s/40s reproduction pieces that were widely distributed maybe 8 or more years ago (I think they were probably printed as a response to the popularity of the Aunt Grace pieces). I think I got my samples at Walmart, but don't quote me on that. None of the five different pieces has any info printed on the selvedge.
Maybe someone else has more or better info on this? I'd be happy to be corrected or straightened out! http://community.here.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif
I first thought I'd wait to see what others say about the other pieces..
But then I decided that I'll just make some wild guesses on them to start the discussion rolling.

#1
#2 early 1990s reproduction of 1940s (see above)
#3 70s?
#4 1960s
#5 is probably a forties/fifties kitchen print...but it's classic enough it could be from most anytime in the past - it's interesting that the print is directional - that might help date it)
There's really no way to know for sure if a fabric was truly a feedsack unless you've got another piece that shows the selvedge thread/string holes where it was sewed together or if it still has a paper label or if you've seen the exact print in a documented feedsack collection.
There's lots of loosely woven fabric around, especially from the first half of the 20th century. Some of it's feed sacks, some of it isn't. And some sacking was woven very tightly from fairly fine yarns. (I think you already know this, but I'm repeating the info for anyone who's new to the subject...)
#6 could be anything, but the mushrooms might point to the 1970s
#7 is a early/mid 50s print.
Okay, let's hear from the rest of you, please!

Answer:
OK, I made my guesses before I read Elaine's and I have to say we pretty much agree.
1. 1960s to current.
2. I guessed 1940s until I read Elaine's answer about the possibility of this being a repro.
3. 1970s to current.
4. 1960s - 1970s.
5. I'm guessing 1960s on this one only because I sold the same print a year or so ago. The piece I had was yardage not feedsack.
6. Current.
7. 1950s. I really like this one! http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif

Sure looks like we pretty much agreed. Anyone got other ideas? It's interesting/fun when you have actually seen a piece of the exact fabric recently!
I've been thinking more about #2. I'm sure I got my 5 coordinating pieces at Walmart, but I'm not sure of the date I bought them. I think it was originally one of their 'regular' lines, not a flatfold or dollar bin bolt. When I first saw the line I absolutely hated it...but eventually I decided that I needed samples of them since they were one of the first 40s repros I'd seen (which isn't saying much, because I hadn't been looking previously) lol I picked up a green series from Walmart too, but I think it was of different prints and from an earlier year. Anyhow, I didn't locate it when I did a quick look this morning....

Thats cool to know about #2 Elaine. I thought it looked 40's. Even if it is repro its still cute. http://community.here.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif. I have a bunch of it, I'm going to use it in a quilt.
Tanya, you can have what pieces I have of the last print if you want it. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif The floral is too big for me to quilt with it. Its neat looking. It looks as if the flowers were painted on.

Hmmm. Maybe it's a more recent piece then...
I'll have to think on this one...

What kind of a quilt will you make with #2? Will you use 5 and 6 and 1 also? Curious, as always... http://community.here.com/infopop/em.../icon_wink.gif

I was thinking of a nine patch with white, reds & med. blues. I am in the process of making my niece a quilt. I have all the blocks done, I just need to put them together & finish it off. Its all 40's fabric with a few repros in there too. Plus Im quilting on that redwork quilt I showed a while back, for a friends daughter. I thought I would have it done by Christmas...and here it is past Easter http://community.here.com/infopop/em...s/icon_eek.gif http://www.here.com/B/emoticons/confused2.gif
And now that its Spring, I find myself outside a lot. Or wanting to paint & do stuff around the house. I definitely sew more in the winter. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
