Barkcloth revisited
Question:
My sister just sent me a link to this site....
http://imageevent.com/vintagetresors...lothstylenames
Warning! It's lots and lots of barkcloth photos, so it may take a while to load on dialup.
But WOW! It's wonderful.
Answer:
Thank you soooooooo much I have bookmarked it!!. Now, after reading about Tanya's barkcloth samples, I think that is something I need to do to help myself. I need to attempt to gather small samples of the different fabrics, get them identified and keep them so I will be sure of what fabric I have. I think I need to try to do the same thing with laces. Hmmmmmm, somebody should make up a sample book and sell it on the internet or ebay for us novices.
Answer:
A few of those look like the wallpaper in my bedroom
I like how you can see the texture on them.
Answer:
Elaine, thank you (and sis) for the web site. Very nice!
I first started collecting barkcloth almost 20 years ago. I never spent more than $20.00 for a pair of panels...that was my limit. I know I passed up a bunch of 1950's fabrics back then but that wasn't what interested me at the time...oh, how I could kick myself now! I've sold almost all that I had collected except for a few of my favorites. Our basement still has the original barkcloth curtains (our house was built in 1954) hanging up!
cariad, I remember Pins-N-Needles (Karen) talked about doing a book just like you described but don't think she ever actually completed it. I would find something like that really helpful when it comes to describing the different weaves of fabric...I haven't a clue on those even though I've read the definitions a million times.
Answer:
I'd love to make sample books to sell.
The real problem is naming the fabrics.
Sometimes what things are called on ebay or in the popular press or even by various catalogs/retailers are not what they are called by the manufacturers or the wholesalers.
I guess you could make a disclaimer about that, but it rather reduces it's 'authority'.
Just look at all the varieties of barkcloth. I look at the small stack I have left here and there are at least 5 distinctly different weaves to the base fabrics.
Cindy Brick has a vintage fabric dating kit
http://www.cindybrick.com/fdk.htm
but it's quilt-weight fabrics, not barkcloth
I have an older version of her book
Answer:
I think it would be just like most other books-although I like the word kit too- i.e. not all roseville patterns are in one book. And for someone like me, being able to FEEL as well as see would be invaluable. I would be your first customer, so put me on the list, NOW!
Answer:
cariad,
Write to me (PM or email) and we'll talk.
Elaine
Answer:
Cariad and I have been talking about what kind of booklet / kit would be helpful to her in identifying fabrics.
Reading over her lists and thinking back on our discussions here at here, I'm thinking we could use some basic STEPS TO IDENTIFYING FABRIC resource threads there.
You know, like a list of things to consider including what the differences are between fibers and weaves and why that info is important.
I'm thinking that THAT info is the first step to any kind of ID of fabrics.
And THEN actual samples might be helpful.
Anyone else have thoughts on this?
I suppose we could also set up some sort of private message room to think through these topics. Do you think this is a good idea?
Elaine
Edited to add:
I'm somewhat uncomfortable with the idea of an individual (me in this case) using this forum to set up a for-profit thing. I think I'd rather do something that could benefit everyone right here.
On the other hand, I do know there are limits to what can be done by words and photos. So down the road there might be some sort of sample set or something to go with the instructions here. How does that sound?
Answer:
I think a fabric dating/identification guide would be wonderful. Just imagine being able to see and feel lawn and Indian Head...
Just thinking about it gives me the vapors.
