Quilt questions
Question:
OK, so I found these two quilts today and fell in love. (You CAN'T KEEP everything, Beth. Yeah, I know.)
The first doesn't appear quite as old and is in good condition, except for some staining. Not bad, but some.

This one looks/feels older. It's backed in a sort of muslin? Heck, I don't know. There is some significant staining on it. There are several worn spots - I've tried to show the biggest. And a couple of places that have been repaired and a couple that need repair. (I LOVE this one!)

Advice? Suggestions? Clean them? If so, how? (The first one I think would hold up well to cleaning. I am afraid that the second would NOT.)
If they're worth something, I'll sell them. If they're not, I'll give them a good home and throw them on the bed in my guest bedroom.
Both measure about 66" x 78".
TIA,
Beth
Answer:
Beth,
Is there somewhere where you could spread the entire quilt out to photograph it? You aren't going to get much feedback until we can see the full tops.
My first impression is that quilt #1 has older fabrics in it. Probably need closer closeups of the fabrics in #1. And maybe some indication of the block size or add a ruler to the photo when you're doing closeups.
How are the bindings done? (edges) It looks as though the 'binding' in #2 is the backing folded over from the back to the front. I don't see the binding on #1.
I like those quilts too! I can see why you fell in love.

Answer:
Beth, could you post pics of the entire tops of the quilts? I would also like to see the back of #1.
I probably would sell them as is but if I were going to use them myself, I would definitely want to clean them if the fabric is sturdy enough to withstand the cleaning.
Joan
Edited to add, Ditto what Elaine said.
Answer:
Beth,
Would you be willing to post your photos to the here board? Or let me do it for you from your hosted photos?
It makes the forum a lot more useful to have photos (that STAY) to go along with the discussions.

Answer:
The third picture of quilt 1 is the back. Let me see if I can clear a place (like maybe my unmade bed ) to photograph them complete.
I'll be back in a few! Wish me luck! I have a new camera. It's either a POS or there are operator error issues! (Yeah, I know. Door number two. )
Thanks guys!
Beth
Answer:
You may post the photos where ever. I don't know how to post them here - you can point me in the right direction to find out or you are welcome to do it. You may not want to keep all of them for posterity but here is the complete set. For now.
I'm going to take more tomorrow out on the front lawn where I can get good pics in real sunlight of the full quilts.

I forgot the ruler thing but the squares in quilt 2 are about 5".

Answer:
Beth, tomorrow try to get a good close up of the #1 fabric backing and maybe a couple of close ups of some of the fabrics on the top also. I think I see several feedsack fabrics in #1 and I'm wondering if the back is also made of feedsacks.
Joan
Answer:
Oh - the bindings:
The binding on #1 is . . . well . . . inconsistent. In some places, the back is folded over. In others, the front and back just come together at the edge and the seam is inside the edge. The back of quilt 1 is mainly 4 wide strips of different material, but there is an area along one edge where other pieces are pieced in. If that makes sense. T
For a frame of reference, the red and white striped pieces on the front of quilt 1 measure 13" x 8". (Well, most of them are. I just noticed there is one red and white striped piece that is narrower.)
The backs of both of these *feel* different than the front. The material (even the patterned material on the back of quilt 1) is more of a looser, open weave.
Thank you guys!
Answer:
So you guys think 1 is older than 2?
That's actually pretty cool . . . because I don't like it as much as #2 and I think I'd like to keep number 2. I could part with #1.
I *should* be able to get some better close ups of the fabric outside in natural light. (Stupid camera has a macro function.) Are there any particular ones I should try to get?
