Gotham City Online
Question:
Even though I sell jewelry on eBay, I look around at what sellers are doing in other categories.
For years Gotham City Online was huge, selling "gently used" clothing gathered from New York City charity operations. Heavy emphasis on designer. Also sold big job lots of clothing.
But a year or two has gone by since the last time I looked at their auctions. Now they're all shoes, no clothing.
What happened? Anyone know?
Thanks,

Answer:
I've not heard of them until now, but I'll check out their shoes.
I can't seem to sell anything at the moment.
Fluff, join us here in the CSA forum..., we'll talk about jewelry too! I'll also check out your auctions. Bet
Answer:
Well Fluff, I'd check out your auctions but you didn't put a link in. Bet

Hi Aunt Bee,
I'm not used to this shameless self-promotion stuff yet. Working on it.
Here's one view.

Here's another.

The first auctions end Monday...one week after my eBay suspension was lifted.

I guess in part what I'm trying to find out: Is the Clothing category dead and buried for big sellers?
I have had some random luck with small lots sourced from various places (a few tradeshows, jobbers with a presence at eBay Live, catalog surplus). Believe me, I do NOT want to go into clothing in a big way.
But if a seller the size of GCO, which is >this close< to 100,000 feedback, can't make it selling clothes on eBay, can anyone? They've got over 9800 listings at the moment. All shoes.

Answer:
Being the nosy type, I decided to ask GCO directly.
They refused to answer. Oh, they responded to my query, but they wouldn't talk about why they weren't in the clothing business any more.
There's GOT to be a story here. Somebody knows.

Hi Fluffy, I spent an entire year selling off my "career clothes" when we moved to THE STICKS, and managed very nicely with that as pretty much my sole source of income.
In Nov/Dec, I decided to sell off some more of my cashmere sweaters, current and vintage. One week's auctions, which at one time would have brought me $300 or so, got me a big yippee-skippy $60. That's before paying listing fees, Paypal fees, and a slight underwriting of the shipping costs. So in my experience, the market sucks.
GCO used to have some WONDERFUL stuff, I recall. I wonder if they got out because they found the market sucks. Or if there's some juicy story
Answer:
I sell new and used clothing (not designer) and did quite well for a year or so, but the last few months have been slow. I'm hoping sales will pick up once all the kids are back in school.
Answer:
Jonathan Garriss, co-founder of GCO and executive director of PeSA, said:
"For a lot of PeSA sellers, the average selling price is getting less and less and their eBay fees continue to go up."
I think we can safely assume that's what happened to GCO's clothing business.
Now, what makes shoes different and more profitable?

-- I was wondering the same thing. If Gotham can't hack it, I don't no what else to say about it. I'm thinking about getting out of the Ebay business if it doesn't pick up in the next couple of weeks.
