Winners and Losers
Question:
Goodworks1 and MapleDr, I know that occasionally someone posts an auction link to a really big bucks seller like the Scotty Dogs fabric and I love those posts.
Do you think this forum might have a weekly or monthly thread with Winners and Losers? The Winners' list would include the high sellers and the Losers' list would include those textile auctions that should have sold for a lot more than the ending bid.
This Pucci towel would surely be a winner.
Pucci Towel

Answer:
Sounds like a great idea Joan.
Maybe you'd like to start it whenever the time comes. Please?
I wonder if there's a way we could get a legitimate photo of the items we're discussing. And some info in the thread about the selling price. It makes the discussion more valuable to have both, I think. But maybe that's unrealistic...
Just thinking here....
That's a wonderful towel! And a fabulous selling price!
Elaine
did you see this one? Just the same, with the same $99.99 opening price...

Answer:
Elaine, what I had in mind was a weekly, biweekly or monthly report with pictures and a link to the auction. I'm not sure, though, about the legality of using the auction picture w/o permission. I know I've seen it done. Then after the report is posted we could have a regular discussion.
The difficulty is that textiles covers such a wide variety of items that it will be extremely time consuming for one person to cover all of them. Perhaps we could lump some of them together and have more than one reporter. Feedsacks, fabrics and sewing items might be one category and household items like tablecloths, towels and other linens would be another. I'm just thinking aloud here. Hopefully others will come along and add to this discussion.
There are posters here who keep up with listings much more frequently than I and would do a better job, perhaps someone would like to volunteer for the job. If not, I can do the first one and see how it goes.
I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks about the idea. Please post your thoughts here.

Answer:
Elaine, did you notice the categories used for the towels? I agree with using vintage clothing but I think I would have used in a second category and listed in Textiles>linens>towels also. I'm not sure about the lingerie.
Joan
Answer:
Lingerie?
Maybe it's because they were trying to get into this category
1947-64 (New Look-Early 60s)
* Coats & Jackets (469)
* Dresses (2168)
* Formal, Bridal (153)
* Lingerie (2280)
* Pants, Jeans, Shorts (89)
* Skirts (189)
* Suits, Outfits (206)
* Sweaters (256)
* Tops, Blouses (482)
* Other (201) Joan, I was just thinking that if you started the thread periodically, then other folks could post as they find stuff. I wouldn't expect one person to do all the searching and posting.
On the other hand, this may be the type of thing that would work well for supporting members only, not just for lurkers. I wonder if Jim has that ready to go yet...levels of access within forums, that is.
In any case, there's no reason not to get started and try it out. And lots of reasons TO do it.
Thanks for the great idea!
Elaine
Answer:
I guess we could ask permission to use the photos...and offer a link to the seller's auctions. Have to ask Jim about that.
And you're right, we'd have to have someone in charge of making sure it was done legitimately, I think. We'd definitely need to look into it further before allowing photos to be hosted here.

Great idea Joan!
Here's my thoughts. How about if it is done a bit on the informal side? How about if we just start a "Winners & Losers" thread. Whenever someone spots an item that fits into one of those categories they can go ahead and post a link to the auction plus a short summary (eg. "1950's tea towel w/ pink poodle design sold for $78.00").
Each time someone posts to the thread it would bring it to the top and hopefully invite comment from other posters (eg. "Oh my gosh, I sold the exact same tea towel at my garage sale for 25 cents!).
If we make it a weekly or monthly type thread, someone who's discovered an interesting auction might forget about it before it's time for the thread.
I don't know anything about the legalities of hosting the photos. I would be satisfied with a link to the auction at the time the poster discovers it and would not feel a big need to have anything archived but maybe that's just me.
Answer:
Tanya, I like your idea and it would certainly be the easiest way to go.
Should we do it like your Terrific Textile Thread and start a new thread each month? I think that might work out nicely if I can remember not to skip a month.

I think that might work out nicely if I can remember not to skip a month. Well, don't look to me for advice!
I'll remind you and you remind me!
