Baking Fabric?
Question:
I'm making some "primitive"-style things with fabric, and I noticed that some people mention that they BAKE their fabric to make it appear more grungy. Anybody know how to do this? Thought I'd ask before I start experimenting ... and catch my stove on fire or something! Tried Googling, but couldn't seem to find anything. TIA! Answer: Hmmm. Never heard of it, but I can see that it would certainly AGE the fabric! Maybe someone here knows. (But I think the majority of us are trying to figure out how to SLOW DOWN aging of fabric! lol) And if you are baking anything besides silk, wool, linen or cotton you will be emitting toxic fumes as it bakes, so be sure the ventilation is good. In some cases even the fabric finishes on the natural fibers may give off fumes. Elaine Answer: I've never done it myself but I believe that the fabric is stained with coffee, tea, vanilla, cinnamon, etc. and then "baked" to set in the stains/scents. It's used to get a primitive or grungy look. I have no idea for how long or what temp. is used though. Answer: I found this message board that discusses different ways to get the grubby look. I've also heard of the baking technique being used on paper for gift tags, etc. It sounds like fun! Answer: Curious... I've heard of baking cloth (not sure if that's the right term), the cloth you lay down for rolling out pie crusts, jelly rolls, etc., but this is new to me. Answer: Thanks y'all! I may try to do some experimenting this weekend while DH is home. Might need to have him standing by with the fire extinguisher! I'll be using pre-washed cotton fabrics only, but will open the windows and turn on the fans just in case. My sister's gonna think I'm bananas. Answer: If you bake any angora, I prefer my goat well-done. Cheers Answer: The results: Baked for 30 minutes at 250 degrees. The first photo is tea-stained, and the second photo is vanilla-stained (smells GOOD!). The vanilla ones turned out a richer color, but the tea ones got more of the "cooked" pattern on them (shows up better in person, actually). Kinda cool! ETA: Having trouble with the attachments ... only one will come up. (?) Trying again ... There, got 'em! Kept getting a "page cannot be displayed" error on the attachments page. Answer: pics look good! So whatcha making? Answer: Little primitive bowl fillers and ornaments. I thought I'd make a variety of people from around the world, and need different skin tones, so I think staining and baking my fabric will work great for that. Here's the one I've made so far, using the vanilla-stained cloth. I sewed her face with DMC floss, and used wool yarn for her hair ... kind of "Raggedy Ann" style, with a twist.
