Ebay Auction Kiss of Death
Question:
Ends tomorrow... no bids yet... but check out the watchers. (see image)
Gotta be the kiss of death!
Sometimes I wonder if eBay added the "watchers" column just to taunt eBay sellers!
Cheers

Sometimes I wonder if eBay added the "watchers" column just to taunt eBay sellers! I know exactly what you mean...I've had a couple pieces of fabric in the last month that had at least a dozen watchers but the final bid never changed the last couple days of the listing. It is frustrating to say the least!

Originally Posted by FiberGuy Sometimes I wonder if eBay added the "watchers" column just to taunt eBay sellers! I agree. eBay doesn't seem to care. I've been writing to them about the Watch feature, and I'll probably keep on writing. One of these days, they may just listen.
I've suggested making the number of Watchers visible to everyone who watches an item. I seriously think if the person watching an item knew how many more people were watching, then, the watchers would start bidding early.
However, then, there would be the people who got everyone in their family, their friends and everyone else to watch their items just to promote bidding.
As far as I'm concerned, that darn Watch Feature can go straight to hello!
Answer:
26 now.... ACK!
Having the watchers visible to potential bidders is a great idea. As the vintage textiles and collectible market in general have declined on ebay over the years, ANYTHING to entice bidders could help!

As far as I'm concerned, that darn Watch Feature can go straight to hello! WHAT??? And not have the ebay "pulse" so we can all see the silly items that morons with (apparently) tons of money can buy????
EDIT (once more): I shouldn't call names... replace "morons" above with "eccentrics".
Sheesh... then we'd have to rely on actual products with a market value to attract people to eBay!! I personally don't know what I'd do if I couldn't come to ebay and readily find some old sandwich or haunted appendage that I could buy.... </sarcasm>

Let me ask this (it's been a while since I sold much at ebay and even then I didn't notice watch list info - is it at MyEbay?)
Only the seller can see the watch list, right?
So you only benefit from the watch list info if you are the seller?

Hi Elaine,
RE: Only the seller can see the watch list, right? So you only benefit from the watch list info if you are the seller?
Yeap... it's on your "my ebay" selling page. I don't know if I would call it a "benefit", but yes, only the seller.
When they first came out with the watch column about 2 years ago, I was thrilled. I thought it would give us an idea of what would probably sell. Bear in mind that, at that time, ebay had only just begun it's downward spiral into lackluster bidding. When before we were disappointed when sales dropped below 70%, sell-through in the collectible categories were nearing 30%, which was a huge shock to us. So... the watch column gave us "hope".
(I remember the DAY they came out with it... Stephani was down in Texas selling at First Monday Trade Days... I called her up on the cell phone just to tell her!)
Well, it didn't take very long to realize that there really wasn't any rhyme or reason, correlating the "watch" column to those items that sell well... or sell at all. I don't know why I still get worked up about it other than to aggrivate my hypertension!
So, to put it simply... the watch column was a big disappointment. It's utterly useless as a seller tool.
I like the idea of displaying watchers on the item page.... perhaps that could entice some bidding!
BTW - The item I posted in my first post was down to 25... but it does have a bid! YEA!!!
Cheers
Answer:
--sometimes I use the watch list to group a bunch of "I don't care which one I actually buy, I just need one of them" things together.
--sometimes I use the watch list to monitor something that I have (like it) in my house that I am interested in selling... to see if it is worth listing...
When I was selling regularly, I let my posting software do the watching for me as it was easier to read and monitor and it kept that history for years. But now I usually just let MyeBay do it for me for just the (sometimes) 90 days its available. I even add items to my "watch" list after the auctions have closed. I'm sure that is a BIG help to the original seller!
As a seller I remember thinking that the number watching was going to be important or meaningful and it never was, at least not consistently enough to be useful.
