Fabrics at auction....
Question:
I will be attending an auction this weekend that has
"yards of vintage fabric...."
I know nothing about fabrics, aside from that some sell well!
Should I even think of attempting to purchase, or
stick to what I know?
Unfortunately, there is no description available of
said fabrics....
Answer:
Hmmm...where's the auction at?
Answer:
Pearisburg, Va

The paper is mine. Hands off!
Answer:
First they say 'thousands' of yards of fabric...
Then in the detail they say 'hundreds' of yards of fabric...
I suppose they could both be right, but they might not be...
It looks like this gal got married in the 40s (or maybe 30s) or so, so I'd guess there'll be plenty of PDK. But I could be wrong... (but if she had a machine that would sew polyesters, it's not on this sale, so maybe there will be dressweight cottons...)
Auction houses can be SO dumb about types of fabric and sewing that it'd probably be worth a trip for Tina.
I don't know, Larry, how you'd do on the non-paper stuff....
Must not be any quilts or interest in quilting or you'd definitely hear about it in the write-up.
Here's an idea Larry. Buy any cotton, linen, or silk fabric besides 60s and 70 double knits or cheap current polys or (most recent) curtain or upholstery fabrics, etc if you can get it for less than $.50/lb. It'd be hard to go very wrong with that. You can always resell it at the OCM and/or ask for help here in the textile forum.
Answer:
Thanks! If I get fabric nice and cheap, that is what I will do!
Answer:
Larry, I just took a look at the photos.
I really do not see any yardage.
There are some nice doilies, hankies, dresser scarves, etc if you can get this guy to move out of the way, you might find even more

Most of this type of stuff won't bring you big bucks on resale - but it does depend on the quality of the work and what kind of shape it's in....
Answer:
yeah, I sent them an email asking about the fabrics... and to see if the
cute cats are on auction too!
Although I must say that most auctioneers seem unable to figure out
how to use their email accounts associated with their sites....
Here's the listing details re sewing...
"Mrs. Norcross was an accomplished seamstress and crafter. There are hundreds of yards of real nice fabric; thousands of spools of thread, hundreds of needles (sewing machine and hand sewing), thousands of sewing implements, tools, trim, lace, bias tape, hemming tape, snaps and other fasteners, zippers, and thousands of buttons (many still on their original cards). If you need it for sewing it’s here, including 3 sewing machines !! Also lots of craft and art items. Knitting and crochet needles, thread & yarn, etc."
Answer:
This will likely sell well...

And these are cute, but I have no idea of value:

Happy Home and Sewing Susan needles pkgs have been reproduced, so I don't know if those are originals or not....

I see contemporary (1970s to 90s) sewing notions, buttons, etc, but no fabric. (A few older buttons, but not many)
I thought I'd located a piece of fabric, but it's actually a poinsettia tablecloth. I've even been looking in the background of the other photos trying to see if there's any fabric there. Maybe it's in some of the boxes under the notions table????
Maybe you should write and ask for photos of the thousands (or even hundreds) of yards of fabric. I don't see ANY.
Answer:
Tried calling... no answer. PAH
That's OK, though... I am accustomed to attending auctions
"blind". (pah)
Answer:
Hmph. I was just going to suggest calling...
Oh well. Have fun! Wish I could go along! (you'll pick me up at the nearest airport? )
