need help listing a quilt
Question:
I listed this on the other board but thought I would ask the people who really know this stuff.
I have been offered a partnership in listing for sale a true museum quality quilt.
this has never been washed, it has one tiny hole, one small seam split, a couple of what look like water stains on the back, otherwise it is georgeous.
there is also a tag on it to identify it and the maker I believe.
the owner used to have newspaper clippings from when it was entered in a show and took first place way back when, but she misplaced them when she moved here.
Any and all advice would be appreciated.
where should I list it?
It is from the maritime region of Canada.
all hand sewn and quilted.
small triangles....it is awesome.....
sorry, I don't have it yet to take pictures, I am trying to research what to do with it first.
thanx in advance for any and all assistance.

Just a thought, but if she could remember the paper, maybe you could call and get copies of the articles. If it wasn't too long ago, they might be microfilmes or fisched and be available.
Couldn't hurt to ask and think of the provenance evidence (did that make sense?).

I second this motion...
Or if she even knows the county or region, maybe the local library or historical society has microfiched copies.
Definitely worth the trouble to track down.
You might consider an appraisal by a certified quilt appraiser. If it's really museum quality, then the appraisal will easily pay for itself.

Take a picture when you can so we can drool...lol. When listing it, make sure every single flaw is noted. Thickness of batting..I'm assuming its cotton..note pattern, stitches per inch...if there are any special fabrics used..like cheddar, turkey red, indigo...etc..

well, the problem was it won first prize I think back in 1905
I am working on tracking down those newspaper clippings, have been for a couple of days,.....I really agree in the value of those clippings.
unfortunately to have it appraised is a 3 hours drive one way and I really don't have a day to spend on that and no one else is interested, they just want the big money from it<grin>
a few questions if you don't mind and I know you guys don't...
should I have it dry cleaned, we have an old timer who owns a dry cleaning shop here and he loves and knows old quilts. otherwise I would not even ask, the answer would be no for me, I sure would not let any young dry cleaner who doesn't truly understand this process handle this thing.
although, I was amazed at how strong the fabrics were in this one.
YES, I will post pics when I get the item, which I think is this afternoon. I may need someone else to do it, I don't know how http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif
it is definitely drooling material, it is great.
as far the actual names of the fabtrics, I am really going to need help in that department.

Drive by posting...
DON'T dry clean it.
DON't wash it.
Read the info on cleaning.
If there are bugs or egg cases, freeze it for a week or so (in a tight plastic bag), but basically, the less you do to it the better if you are talking museum quality.
--------
Are you sure there are no appraisers closer than 3 hrs away? Have you checked the quilt appraisal groups sites?
----------
I'll be checking back periodically, but I'm in the midst of a banner painting project for Advent... 6 ft x 9 ft (that's a lot more surface than I thought....!!!) and it has to be done by tomorrow...
