Fabric shipping costs
Question:
Hi
I was checking out ebay stores, ones that sell fabrics.
I came across this persons flat rate shipping policy. I've been toying with opening a store and was trying to figure out the best way to handle shipping.
Usually I weigh each piece. But it would be so much easier if I had a flat rate.
The following quote is from an ebay store:
Quilt Cotton United States Shipping Chart
$1.50 First Class 1 FQ
$2.00 First Class ½ Yard
$2.75 First Class 1 yard
$3.10 First Class for 1 ½ - 1 ¾ yards
$3.50 First Class for 2 yards
$4.05 Priority Mail up to 5 yards
$8.10 Priority up to 20 yards How does this sound to you? (folks who sell fabrics)
Myself, I just haven't been able to squeeze 5 yards into a flat rate envelope.
Believe me I've tried. Have you?
I would have to check out the flat rate box at 20 yards. I know it can hold quite a bit.
Answer:
You could do that. You wouldn't lose money as long as you stick with quilting weight fabrics.. It's fair.
And it would encourage multiple buys to save on shipping.
But you'd still have to refigure the final prices for the invoices at the end, right?
Answer:
Those rates seem pretty reasonable to me if, as Elaine said, you stick to quilting weight fabric.
Answer:
Five yards in a flat-rate envelope (I'm assuming that's the case) and 20 yards in a flat rate box seems a bit "overstuffed" to me (unless it's new fabric that has had all the sizing washed out!). As a buyer, I suppose I wouldn't mind it... but as a seller, I prefer our packages have a bit more of a professional appearance.
Cheers.... and Happy New Year!

doobeedog,
What did you decide to do?
