Gift ideas for a veteran cross-stitcher?
Question:
Okay I know there's a lot of you here who deal in cross-stitch patterns etc.
I'm trying to think ahead to the er holiday season (for once) and my potential MIL is a veteran cross-stitcher. And we are running out of ideas on what to get an 81 year old who loves sweets but is diabetic and doesn't really need anything. You know the problem?
So I know zip about cross-stitching but I thought it might be a place to start. What would be a great gift for someone who's been doing cross-stitch for years?

How about an nice antique frame or gift certificate for a framing shop?
Answer:
Maybe a nice case to carry supplies in? For the sweets, there's plenty of chocolate shops who carry sugar free goodies. http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif

Depends on your budget. I'd search for cross stitch* on eBay, see what the hot things are (the most expensive) and try to win it. I think their are a few 'holy grails' of cross stetchery out there, books and such.

empty frames....and maybe some materials to go in them and a favourite pattern or two and a hint hint, this would look really good in my front entrance when you get it finished............<wink wink>

I run into the same problem with my mother. You can always give her something to add to her stash, such as fabric or patterns. How about cross stitch gloves, if she gets sore hands? One thing that goes over well is a gift certificate to their favorite craft store.
<shamelessly adding> I have some lots of unique patterns up now for .99

Okay I like that idea (and all the others too!). So what are the holy grails of cross stitching? Do cross stitchers just keep looking for new patterns? She likes to do all kinds of knitting, stitching. She made a "quiet book" for her great grandson which has a lot of pages (a-z) with something different sewn on each one.
Another thing she took a shine too was my little house that I have in my kitchen. Brought back memories of dollhouses she used to make. So that's a possibility. Maybe a cross stitch pattern of a house? That gives me an idea. Can you get cross stitch patterns made up from a photograph?
Chocolate is a strong possiblity http://community.here.com/infopop/em...icon_smile.gif Little too early to ship to FL but ALWAYS appropriate for a sweet tooth.

Tessa, what about one of those OTT Lights? They're pricey but I saw some at Jo-Ann this week for around $40. The light is amazing and I know I'd love one for hand quilting so I imagine a stitcher would like them too.
There are some superb sites that have patterns and kits - maybe an unusual pattern or kit from a designer she doesn't know? That's assuming you know her tastes of course.
There's a French company called 'Le Bonheur des Dames' that sells online and their stuff is incredible. They have a beautiful antique looking alphabet sampler that's done on natural color linen, all in white thread. It's huge. I made one and it took about 1 year but it looks fabulous framed and matted.
