Ideas?
Question:
Hi,
I hate for my first post to be so spong-y, but I've been chasing my tail over this piece for about 6 months now. My father, a seller of such things as Indian Squash Blossoms, bracelets, halters, rings, naja's, etc...handed me this little gem awhile ago and it's been one dead end after another. It's silver, not hallmarked, age uncertain...though if the patina is any clue I'd guess '40's perhaps, definitely have an Asian Indian appearance to it and is quite musical, rather like a tamborine, though maybe a little flat. There's two clasps, one of which is shown laying loose in one photo. The clasp is a very simple tensioned silver spring essentially and both work quite well. I'm not at all sure why this piece would have been made with 2 clasps...in fact, I'm not sure of anything with regard to this bracelet. Could I get some help? Thanks. -Rod-

PS, want to hear it? I can do a few seconds of video clip with my digital cam...it has video and sound capabilities.

Hi Rod, welcome to here.
I think your bracelet was made for belly dancing. I have an anklet with the same type of little bells (not near as many as yours) on it and the lady I bought it from, she was from India, said they were for belly dancing. Mine does not have a silver mark on it but I'm sure it is. It does have a makers mark, Geeta Madras, on the clasp.
My clasp is different from yours even though the clasp holder looks the same. Mine is a screw type, the holder itself only has one thread at the top but it screws in fine. Pictures below.
Just guessing on my part but I think one of your clasps is just supposed to work as a hinge so it can be opened to be put on.

Hattie,
Thanks for the reply. Interesting. There's some similarities, some difference but the theme sure seems the same, huh? I'm sure you're right about one clasp being just a hinge and the two pins are different as well. One is flat headed, the other is round headed. Obviously the round headed pin is the one that's supposed to be pulled.
Not that it likely has anything to do with mine, but what do you value yours at? -Rod-
Answer:
A pic of the pins and a tooling mark on the top of one. I dont think it's a hallmark although I suppose it could be.
Answer:
Well a few years ago on eBay I valued it at $25.00 because I didn't want to give it away for a low opening bid. I put it up a few times but there was no interest in it at that price. We are in the process of building a website and I will probably put it there and hope to find that one person who falls in love with it. I'm not sure what price I will put on it there.
I wish I knew its real value. I know very little about jewelry and I have never been able to find another one like it on the net.
The markers hallmark on mine it on the front of the screw holder.
Answer:
It apears to be a converted bangle, hence the two pins. One to act as a hing and one to be a realeasse. Belly dancing is a good thought as stated prior. I see the test mark, but would suspect this to be a low grade silver pice in the 800 range. I would price such at about $45.00 to $60.00 in a store. I have no idea what it would bring on ebay. Ethograpic comes to mind for catagory there.

It's not sterling but maybe it's above .800 somewhere. The inner band looks to be a higher percentage than the bells though. -Rod-
