I think SMX and Decker Truck Line (both out of Fort Dodge) hire drivers out of there.
I've worked for both them companies.
SMX in the early 90's, paid percentage and no tarp pay (and required a tarp on every load), I made bupkiss---have changed now to mileage pay, and tarp pay.
They would be a good one to drive for now.
They treated me o.k. and never shorted me on my checks...just did'nt make enough money at the time.
Decker Truck Line is a great company. I drove for them for a year in the late 90's before Don Decker let me go for telling him that if my truck (which had a front end problem) failed on the road, and someone was hurt or killed because his mechanics could not fix it in two visits to the garage for a total of 18 hours (and they kept dispatching me in it); that he and his company would be held responsible---not I.
(I could have sued for my job back since they let me go for refusing to drive unsafe equipment---but I just let it go)(I did'nt even refuse, I just reminded him who would be responsible if an accident occured)
Not all the equipment is like this, and for the most part the mechanics got the job done---I was the exception, not the rule.
Now that Decker owns Umthun and all their clients, they have longer runs and less Chicago with wallboard and back to Webster City, or Mason City with coils or flat steel.
I would not be affraid to recomend either for their flatbed divisions---don't know much about the Van side @ SMX, or the Reefer/Van side at Decker.
Good luck. Do some research on these two companies if you decide to go to that school---make your own mind up. It'd be an easy "in".
