CDL and HAZMAT easier then I thought
Question:
Yesterday I passed road test and then I went to pick up my licence When I decided it would be nice to have a hazmat too. I sit on parking lot in front of CDL facility and read the hazmat section twice, went in and took a test. I don`t get it how can anyone have hard time with those tests. I took all the test on my own and I used the driving school just for a skills and road. My CDL cost me less then 1000. I know it might be harder to find a job without certificat but I am not in a debt and I can still not to work for a few more months. pretty easy. Answer: Yes, the test is extremely easy. What you don't learn from taking the test is that when you haul hazmat, you the driver are fully responsible to follow the regulations to the letter. Drivers and carriers are heavily fined for such infractions as mispellings on paperwork or not having the bills in the right location in the truck. The test is a joke, but the work is not. Good luck! Answer: Some people struggle with these tests and some find them easy. Some just don't take tests well. But tests don't make you an expert. They are not nearly as hard as they could be, which sounds somewhat dangerous, but remember, if you are ever in doubt, just look it up in the book or call the company. Hazmat is basically just taking responsibility and knowing what you are hauling. Put up the placards, place the bills in the driver's door pocket, follow the specified routes, and plan in advance. Never go through a tunnel, through a city you can bypass, or into a residential neighborhood. Make your RR stops, too. Every two hours or 100 miles (and you will have to plan this), make stops and log them to check tires, load securement, and make sure your placards haven't blown off. Always try to get a few extras from the shipper in case they blow off and always carry duct tape. This is basically what you need to know to drive most hazmat loads. It is extremely important you follow this procedure, which will become second nature as you haul more and more hazmat loads. Very important, but not difficult. Answer: One other thing: secure a copy of the Emergency Response Guidebook and make sure you can reach it WHILE RESTRAINED BY THE SEAT BELT whenever you haul Hazmat. If you don't have it or you can't rech it while wearing your seatbelt, you can be fined. I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane.
