FULLER SUPER 10 TRANSMISSION
Question:
This is my first post so please forgive my mistakes in the process. I am not much of a computer person but am learning.
I am a person who chose to retire from a high stress, high income professional career in order to seek new experiences. I never wanted to go to college but being the obedient son of good parents I left the hard work of a farm family while all the while I always loved operating equipment and working with my hands.
I satr training with CRST on December 29 and look forward to the experience. I understand the team driving approach and actually prefer that. In my early years I have slid tandems and fifth wheels and know the value of a partner in that process. Also, backing in tight situations was never a strength and I remember Dad always getting on me about getting the hay wagon in the barn.
Also, the CRST school is near my parents so I can stay with them as opposed to rooming with someone who snores in a ratty motel room.
Forgive me, I am rambling...
Over the years I have driven a tractor or twon and am familiar with most shift patterns. I understand CRST uses FULLER SUPER 10 TRANSMISSIONs. <I cut and pasted that>
What exactly is a SUPER 10 and how does it differ from a standard 10 speed transmission.
Also, I can double clutch but prefer not to. Is that a requirement in Arkansas on the CDL test?
Thanks for all the information available on this forum,
Beanbag

Answer:
for instance 3rd and 4th gears are in the same position as opposed to 3rd and 8th? So rather than manually shifiting you flip the switch. Do you still clutch?
Thanks!

Answer:
You do nothave to clutch to do a button shift, but I prefer to push the clutch in as it makes the shift smoother.
To downshift you pull the button back and slowly increase the RPMs until it shifts.
When upshifting push the button forward and push in the clutch. The RPMs will drop and the tranny will shift.
I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane.

Answer:
each hole with the selector. Yes you can shift this tranny easily without the clutch. Yes you can split up or down without the clutch. Yes you can position the selector before shifting. Neutral torque is what will shift it. If you can shift without a clutch then I don't need to explain the feel for torque that is required. Many just don't get it. I would suggest you double clutch for your test...BOL

Answer:
as it seems all I need to learn is a new shift pattern. I have a good feel for rpm's, torque and as best I can explain the feel. Looking forward to this as if I understand correctly it is a lot less work. Also, doesn't it make downshifting a heck of a lot easier?

My guess is that you must be in control of the vehicle at all times. If you do not use the clutch when shifting, you are not. I would say you should do this on your road test. Once you've passed the road test and are out on your own, float 'em.

Super 10 is pretty easy. I drove for CRST after there school for awhile last summer. The only problem I had was when you use cruise control on there International's in tenth gear, the button downshift to ninth would not work after turning off the cruise. You had to clutch, kick it out of gear, and back into ninth, or it wouldn't drop back. It caused a few scary moments until I got used to it. Don't know if was just with International's or what. A side note! Think real good about considering another carrier, and team driving. Can you trust your LIFE to some stranger while you are sleeping? Maybe one who has never drivin in snow in his life? Also don't beleive what the promise you as far as money. I know when you start out it all sounds exciting, but that will end about the first week out.

Answer:
It`s seems me easier to shift regular 10sp since there is less messing around with the switch.
How do you shift those 13,15,18 speeds. Is like a regular or super 10?

Answer:
Do you still clutch? Don't have to and it is much easier not to. But you need to know whats required for the states test. Most require it.
"How do you shift those 13" The first gear located straight down from reverse stands alone, you don't use that position in combination with other gears as you do the other 4 positions, it is hardly ever used. Gears 2 through 5 are single gears and you simply shift through them individually moving the stick to each hole. Gears 6 through 13 are split. They operate just like the super 10. You flip one lever up the one on the front of the stick just like a regular 10 to go into the higher gears and shift into 6th. Then when ready you just flip a switch on the side of the shifter forward let off the fuel and it will shift to 7th. Push the lever back again and put the shifter in the next hole your in 8th. Just repeat for the next gears. It's really easy. Do it in reverse to shift down.
I think 13's are my favorite. Lots less down shifting to change gears for climbimg etc.. Super 10's are also good because of less need to move the stick around. Although it is easy the less work involved the easier it is to drive.

Answer:
Today I drove super 10 for a first time and i have to say that i just love it. It was asome. At least compare to 15 year old truck i drove at driving school. I realy enjoy shifting half gears with switch. The only think I don`t like much is automatic 9 and 10.
