My Saga at Millis (CRUSHED)
Question:
Went to Millis classes started the week of Thanksgiving. I wont do a day by day, just the highlights, 1st off paperwork, then Hours of Service, Federal Regs, Watched video on shifting Eaton Fuller Transmissions, got to bobtail in Freightliners and Volvo, did drop and hook, Map reading, trip planning 118 point safety inspection (this was in Hamilton Ohio terminal where school took place), Then backing manuvers, straighline, serpintine, blind side/drivers side paralell parking, ally dock. Last week we got to test out on backing, had 2 days to do it, Drove rig one hour on State Highway. Well come test day and I only got straight line, alley dock and drivers side parelell. Because I was unable to pass I had to get cut from class. Everything else I did was great, instructor, Bill, thought I was a great driver, good student, just thought I needed more time than Millis could provide. So I left with head hung low, tail between legs, confidence level shot to hell and back. Beat myself up pretty bad on this, did everything but flog myself in the village square. Regained my composure after several hours, packed van and came back home to Massachusetts. My experience was excellent overall, I walked away with very valuable knowledge and experience, the school and trainer were fantastic. I'm not giving up, going to try to get into another company, I've come to far to give up now. If anyone can offer advice on companies where I can get training in exchange for employment I would appreciate it. (Pumpkin and Millis are off the list, pumpkin because they are not recruiting in New England) My classmates/roommate were great people and I wish them nothing but the best.
Thanks for reading and helping out.
John.

Answer:
They have a driving school that is in Medway, Ohio. But, you'll only be qualified for auto-shifts. Also, you can't have any accidents in the last 18 months.

Answer:
Check with Watkins/Shepard/Missoula Mt. When there, you will have free access to practice after school hours and into the evening if you like. Many folks pair up and spot each other. Structured yard manuevers during class time but on your own after hours. An afternoon on the horn and you'll likely come up with a list of choices to fit your needs....BOL

Answer:
Johnbefleet, why didn't you go to NETTT? From what I understand, it's an excellent school. In my opinion, it would be the way to go. While you're in school, you could research various carriers, local & otherwise and not be under the gun. Who knows, you may even be able to sign on with Millis, if you so choose.

You forgot to correct the spelling & grammar mistakes.

Answer:
Did Millis send you home or did you decide to go home yourself?
I attended Millis early 2002. Bill was my insructor also. Millis passes everybody. If they didnt send you home you should of just stuck it out, you would of got better and got more driving time than you would ever want when you get with your trainer.

I won't blow my top, very laid back. Sorry about not seperating the sentences but I was kind of in a hurry as I was typing my experience.
NETTS - I don't have $4,995.00 to attend, getting a loam will be impossible, I have a high debt to income ratio. I did check them out though about 3 months ago and I was impressed by them.
Because I wasn't able to get all my manuvers down (had 2 days to test out), Millis asked me to leave. The manuvers I couldn't nail down were Serpentine, blind side parallel and the manuver (don't remember what its called) but it's where the rear trailer wheel ends up next to a cone with a number bar attached, your goal is to have the wheel(s) on one of the numbers (0 to 5).
Alley dock, straight line backing and drivers side parellel I was able to do with a little difficulty but I nailed them. I worked for 4 solid hours last Thursday to get all my manuvers, I went down fighing and gave it my all.
Well thanks for the advice guys. I will be checking a couple of times a day to see what other info I get.
Have a good one, drive safe.
John

Answer:
Check out Midwest Coast Transport out of Sioux Falls, SD. They have their own school and training program. You have to stay with them for like a year and it's all free, except for your lodging. You can reach them at 1-800-843-9904. ask for recruiting and tell them you are a prospective student, with some training already. The best thing about the school is the fact that if you're struggling, they will come in on weekends, stay late, or do whatever they can to help you pass. They will not JUST pass you, cuz you'll be pulling their trailers. Oh yeah, forgot to tell you that, they are an ALL owner operator company. You either own the truck or drive for a fleet owner. Good luck
