Question:
I am new to truck driving and thinking of going with us express. What can anyone tell me of this company? Can I get the miles I need? How are their terminals? Any info greatly appreciated

Answer:
I drive for US Xpress and have had very good luck with them. They have been, and continue to be, straight with me; fair and honest. I have detailed much of my experiences on the Pumpkin Driver forum.

I'm currently working for Xpress Global, a division of US XPRESS. I have been here for 7 months now and enjoy working for them. Just remember ALL trucks are auto-shift transmission. Should you decide to leave US EXPRESS and go to another company you may have to go through their training to learn how to shift manually, there is a BIG difference between the two.

Answer:
When you get your Class A after USX training, it will be a restricted license for auto-shift only and would require retesting for an unrestricted at a later date.

Used to be a great company, but not anymore. The HQ in Chattanooga has some of the most brain-dead people working for them. You may get a good dispatcher during the daytime, but at nighttime, or on the weekend, forget it! Send a message on your Qualcomm, and wait hours and hours for a response.
If you get held up at a customer (even when it's Xpress Global Systems, owned by USX), it's nearly impossible to get compensation for detention pay.
The maintenance on their trucks went downhill from what it was years ago.
Terminals: Colton, CA, OKC, and Medway, Ohio are decent. Tunnel Hill, GA (Chattanooga) is okay. The worst are Sacramento, Memphis, Laredo, and Austell, GA (Atlanta).
One big complaint I have about them: They have a fleet owner (Swift Enterprises, Inc., not affiliated with Swift Transportation in Phoenix, AZ) that seems to get preferential treatment over everyone (company drivers, owner-operators included), and I don't think it's fair to those who wait around for hours to be dispatched from a terminal, only to see a Swift Enterprises truck come in, drop one loaded trailer, grab another loaded one, and haul a--.

I was told Swift was owned by the brother of whomever it is that owns USX. Thus, the special treatment. Most of their trucks are KW T2000. I met one of their drivers at a company he delivered to in Arlington, Tx where I was working. He was thankful to be working for them and enjoyed being able to shift a truck again.

Greg Swift, owner of Swift Enterprises, I've been told, is possibly a cousin of Max Fuller's. Their fleet has some T-2000s, T-600s, and a few W-900s for his senior drivers. I don't think he provides benefits (insurance) for his drivers.
Within the last year, I've seen several of Swift's trucks pulling Schneider trailers.

Thanks for clearing that up. You know how the rumors go.

Incidentally, I've only been with USX for 4 months, and now on a sweet dedicated that brought an .11 cpm raise, plus the across-the-board raise that will come in January! I've also been training, which normally requires 1 year service... but then, I'm an exemplary employee.
