My 8th week in truck driving school
Question:
Here's my 8th week (I'm half way through the course now) at truck driving school finished Wednesday, October 16, 2002. Monday: More review and discussion on the need for mental preperation for maneuvering, particularly right-hand turns, but also every aspect of driving semis. Instructor is, again, passionately emphasizing looking before, during, and after the turn. He's also being very candid and up front about the fact that he also makes mistakes, that he has to treat every turn/maneuver as a new one; he's know different than us. Worked on textbook on speed and space management. Four of us went with the instructor around town in a tractor-trailor to begin to get and idea about driving in the real world (we'll all be starting to drive on the streets this week or next week.) Boy, do I appreciate the consistancy needed for speed and space management! Practiced backing and doing the rodeo (close-quarter maneuverings.) Tuesday: More discussion about hazard awareness. Watched a video called "Twenty Reasons to Not Tailgate." (like one reason--the last one they showed of a massive crash and fire of a big rig that was tailgating--wasn't enough. Was for me, that's for sure!) Continued discussion on speed and space management. I tested/checked-off on doing a pretrip to on a tractor-trailor. I did fine. (Next week we'll be checking off on the rodeo.) Practiced the rodeo. Wednesday: Instructor's gone for the rest of the week. His assistant held class. Spent the morning helping a fellow who's struggling with the rodeo. Practiced on the rodeo myself. Thursday: No school Friday: No school. It's nice to get a break from school, but I miss not being able to practice. Well, till next week! Answer: You're halfway home ... BOL to ya! Answer: Any thoughts who your gonna drive 4? Answer: nofxn40s: I don't know about Starkman but, I've chosen (and been accepted already) by Crete and Shaffer ... and, I've decided to concentrate on either flatbeds and / or tankers! Answer: why is your schooling 8 weeks? my schooling was 3 weeks, went to company orientation and learned the same things for another 2 weeks then got in truck with a trainer for 6 weeks...in 11 weeks i had my own truck and doing great Answer: txtrucker1515: For some reason, Starkman chose a 16-week course in MN (his Instructor is a former Professional Driver). Where did you take your 3-week course and who are you driving for now? Here in Houston, the 3-week PTDI-certified course is held at the Houston Community College.
