Overnite Transportation
Question:
Does anybody have any knowledge of what it is like to work for Overnite Transportation?

Answer:
Yes, I drove P+D for them in 93' and 94' so it may not be accurate. This was just befor the big union push.
This was one of the best jobs I ever had--I actually looked forward to going there on Monday mornings!
If you can get a linehaul position with them, TAKE IT AND RUN! You will not touch $hit, except for the steering wheel and gearshift knob. Occasionally, at smaller terminals, you may have to hook up your own doubles--and thus you would have to touch crank handles, converter dollies etc., you will be paid for this, but most of the time they are set up and ready to go by the jockeys. You will make at least $1,200 per wk with lots of benefits. If the job requires an overnight stay--you get a hotel or clean bunkhouse with seperate rooms.
Now, P+D is still good--very organized and no real pressure to produce. If you like power steering and air conditioning this may be a problem, however.
I have no idea about special services division.
I only worked out of three terminals, Balt and DC and manassas, so maybe all the crap and horror stories they are saying about terminals in the mid-west is true. I never observed nor experienced any serious bullcrap.
Despite all the labor conflicts with the teamsters and negative comments towards overnite I still feel it is a good job.

Answer:
Best non-union outfit that you could go with. Only non-union trucking company that I know, that has a company pension that is 100% funded by the company, plus the common 401K plan. A driver can retire at 55 with either 25 or 30 years of service, I cant remember which, but with full benefits. Best health insurance going, better than the Teamsters. Good equipment and for the most part, pretty good supervisors. You have a few $ssholes.
I took early retirement from Overnite because I got involved in the union push and saw the handwriting on the wall. But I cant say a bad word against Overnite. My son was a terminal manager until recently, he resigned and took a position with a private fleet. But both of us enjoyed our years with Overnite.
Just a grouchy old man.

Answer:
I've got to agree. If you have a chance to get on with them do it. I have talked with a few of their team drivers and all have said nothing but good. The miles, money and benefits are there. team driving is all terminal to terminal and no loading/unloading. Just drop and hooks pulling doubles. A good choice and opportunity for you.

Answer:
If memory serves me correctly, Overnite is owned by Union Pacific and it is up for sale. Sure hope the new owners keep it like it is.
