Need info on Central Vo Tech!
Question:
Finally going to Central Vo Tech in August. Have been putting it off and have to decided to finally go for it. Have been researching for the right school and believe this is the right choice. I live in Las Vegas so I will be driving to Oklahoma. Questions for anyone who has been there. 1. Do they do all the testing (CDL) at the school? When and how? 2. Housing! What is it like? I heard they have several places, and which is the best place to stay. 3. Recruiters, How many and who comes to each class? Thanks Answer: They did the testing at the school when I went in 2000. The housing was very good then also. I had my own effeciency apt. Yes recruiters are there toward the end of the class. It was an excellent school when I went. The staff was very professional, the equipment is in great shape, and the course in very good also. Not a dirt lot like some schools have. Hope this helps. Oh, try to get as much backing practice as you can. It will pay off! Take care Answer: You Have Mail. Answer: Choclit snda, Please send your email again, I had to update my new email address. Thanks db274 Answer: Check Your "box"...I think it went thru this time. Answer: Very professional, strong on safety, thorough in teaching. Just about all the carriers recruit from them, be prepared to fill out a LOT of applications unless you've already got your eye on a particular company or two. I lived in Vegas for 13 years before moving to rural TX and living here 6 years, so if ya ain't used to quiet living, start preparing yourself now!! You'll have weekends free and there are loads of great fishing lakes in Oklahoma if you like to fish. (Huh, managed to work in fishing with two posts in one day, go figure.) Good housing, you don't know until about a week, maybe less, exactly what you'll be getting. Sometimes it's a 2BR apartment that you share (unless you're part of a married team, then you get the whole thing), sometimes 1BR if that's all they have, just depends. But decent quality apartments. The town of Drumright is just, well, delightful springs to mind. Very charming main street (school is at the end, turn at the sign, don't follow the Yahoo map). Cute little old train depot they've turned into a park. With an oil pump behind it, haha. Very clean. Three places to eat, a steak house (sign says closes at 9:30 but they lock the doors at 9), Lee Za's pizza cafe, again, closes early, and Sonic which opens first and closes last, LOL. Clean, friendly town. Walmart about 20 mins or so away. All kinds of lakes in Oklahoma with easy access; your weekends are your own and it's a good way to see the state. And there's not a lot to do in town. They also include three shirts that they want you wear while attending and a really nice book/tote bag. Did I mention fishing? Go a day early and get your Oklahoma DL to get in-state tuition, all you need to do is surrender your NV DL, pay your fee, look into the vision thing, collect your paperwork, and get sent to the tag office to have your picture taken, wait 5 minutes, are you an organ donor, do you want to register to vote, no and no, here's your license, bye. We went through McAlester for that, if you wind up there, be there by 3:30 as the DL office closes at 4 which is convenient as the tag office closes at 5. Don't stand in line at an Oklahoma tag office, you need to show your paperwork first, the line is for people who already shown their paperwork. In-state tuition is about $800 less than for non-residents. Then if you really want your NV license back, you just reverse the process when you return to Vegas. Course the lines are a lot longer and the people not so friendly, but whatever you want to do. Get your DMV record printed out while you're at the tag office. The clerks will question why you want it as you'll only have had your OK DL for 5 mins, but they're glad to provide it for the $10 fee. You'll also need your NV DMV record in advance as well as your DOT physical. Drug screen (pee in a cup) on your first day of school. AND they sure do teach you to remember your log book. EVERY DAY. If you don't, you get to carry a real log around with you for a day. Not too many folks forget more than once, haha. Testing facilities right there at the school, very nice computer room, plenty of computers, and you can use them to practice testing when you're not busy with other things. Geez, I should be getting a commission, gotta go, seems I've got a phone call to make, ROFL. BOL to you, great school, great choice. Answer: Also, if you get an OK DL, besides getting a better tuition, you can also get the in-state rate for...... A FISHING LICENSE!!!!! Answer: there isnt much to do much to do in drumright i lived there for a year b4 i bought my house in cushing.(10 miles west on 33. in addition to the places already listed are Josephs restraunte (never been there heard its excellent and a diner right on main street.for night life there is Aces bar and the wayside inn off the truck route.there is also a library and fitness place if you travel to cushing they have a mazios pizza, mcdonalds, carl jrs sonic, pizza hut,the steer inn restraunt, homestead, subway and a really good BBQ place. Bowling alley and movie theatre(cheap like less than 5 bucks) they will probally tell you at the school but if you go south on hwy 16 watch your step in shamrock its a speed trap. i never went to central tech but see there trucks all over the place if i can be more help email me Answer: Also, only a couple hours or so away is the wonderful Bass Pro Shops in Springfield, MO!! Oh boy, somebody obviously needs some time on a lake - QUICK, WHERE'S MY TACKLE BOX!!! Answer: When I attended the school there we would go over to the "big" campus next door where they would allow us to use the computer's there at night. The one's at the truck campus are not connected to the internet. On weekend's you can go to Stillwell where the O/U university is...lots of stuff to do there and it's only 45 minutes away..Great school and trainers..GOOD LUCK Bullmoose Answer: Thanks for the information for everyone that responded! Txmama thanks for the detail information, I really appreicate it, one question Did you need a Oklahoma address to get a DL. What did you use? Answer: Hey, 274 if you don't mind me asking are you going to school for Willis Shaw,I almost went to Drumright for my school but found one local. I called the school and the folks there were very polite and informative, I talked to a woman named Carol she will answer any questions you have. Best of luck OK is a great state I think you will like it. EsterJ Answer: Excellent school, I have given recruiting segments there several times when I was a company recruiter, (independent recruiter now, need a job? contact me..lol). Carol is a very nice person as is Jeri and the whole staff. Excellent program, in fact as a company recruiter I visited several schools to evaluate their programs and Drumright was the only one I would hire out of. Drumright is small, so is Oilton, but Manford is close as is Lake Keystone, good fishing there. If you have your fishing lic and tackle, leave the school turn left on 18 go about 3 miles to the first section line road to the left, go down it to any of the dirt roads that cut off and follow them to the bank of the Cimmaron River, most is oil lease land and not a problem to fish from the bank. I lived in the area for 8 or 9 years before moving to OKC. Family still live in Oilton and Silver City. If I can answer any questions or be of any help don't hesitate to contact me. Answer: Questions for anyone who has been there. I'm a recent graduate of CT. 1. Do they do all the testing (CDL) at the school? When and how? All testing is done at the school. Very convenient. The written tests are given on the Friday of the second week, by a state examiner. The road tests are given around the first of the fourth week, by the school instructors. After you pass your CDL road test you have to go to a "tag agent" within 24 hours to get the picture license. There's one in Drumright if you're staying there. 2. Housing! What is it like? I heard they have several places, and which is the best place to stay. The housing they are currently using is apartments above a cafe/antiques store, right downtown. I hear it is very suitable. 3. Recruiters, How many and who comes to each class? You'll probably see around 8 recruiters. There's no way to know who's going to come on any given week. We saw Alliance (a local Tulsa co.), KTL, USA Truck, Swift, USXpress, Tyson, Southern Refrigerated Transport, and Central Refrigerated. I think that's all there was. There's also a class that's dedicated to Willis Shaw people. WSE pays for their training in exchange for a 1-year contract. Central Tech is a good school and a great value. You won't be disappointed if you go through their program. If you do, watch out for Mr. Whitton Answer: Choclit snda! I never did get the mail, Please try again if you get a chance.
