Starting Over Not by Choice
Question:
Well, it happend I was working as a railroad conductor and held a very high and powerful job as Union Officer. Now after 7+ years of giving the Carrier Sh*te they axed me and my old man. Trumped up charges, lol. So here I am 30 yrs old looking at getting into trucking. From What I read here and know, I can tell it's no bed of roses, but it's something that has always interested me.
I have been looking into Schneider but more strongly at Roehl as a matter of fact I already applied with them (hope by me putting on my app. that I was facing possible termination won't hurt me too bad)
Anyhow, any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. After serving in the USMC and working the rails time away won't be anything new to me or the family.
Schneider did tell me they had a dedicated run near me that I could try for. Neenah,WI to Scranton,PA home weekly. Well enough for now

Answer:
USMC, it looks like we are at opposite ends of the spectrum: You are getting out of railroading, I'm thinking about getting in.
A)What does a conductor do?
B)What's starting money for a conductor (ballpark)?
C)I don't actually want to "drive" the train because it's not if you get into a bad accident(hitting a car or person), it's when. I cannot and do not want to handle that.
D)Any other railroad jobs? I.e., track maintenance etc.
They are hiring for conductors around my area. You would have to attend a 5 week course at a local community college.
E)CN management sucks. Please refer to my post concerning runaway train: http://roundtable.truck.net/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=6456013822&f=2766031032&m=2186058054
I can't really help you much as far as which company/ies to start off with because when I started I went with smaller local outfits.
But I can suggest that you at least investigate U.S. Express. I've got a friend who started out with them and went back to them after about 7 years with other companies. He is quite the happy camper, so far.
