Question about getting started in the business
Question:
Ok guys/gals, here is my situation. I am 20 years old and currently hold my class A, even though i am restricted to WV. I am currently a Junior at West Virginia University, where i AM gonna graduate in may of 2005. I have a real good friend thatpulls a bullwagon and has helped me get my cdl's and also gives me haul jobs in the state on weekends. He offered me a job for the summer driving and he told me he would pay me 25% of what the truck grosssed( ill be 21 in may). My problem is my folks, they really dont like the idea of me being out on the road at all, but this is something i really wanna do, but dont wanna disrespect my parent while doing it. any sugeestions?....Sorry if i seem to be rambling, but this has been eating at me since he offered me the job this past weekend. thanks guys/gals...keep it safe out there! Hauling cattle OTR is tiring and there will be times you: 1. Feel obligated to make the delivery on time damn the torpedos full steam ahead. 2. Will be asked to break the law. 3. Have the experience of dealing with the new HOS while contending with livestock protection rules. Bull haulers have large cars that go fast. It's important to have the discipline to resist the temptation to cruise at 75 mph in a 60 mph state. Cattle hauling touches a deep seated cowboy mentality and I even considered it myself a time or two. But you have to loose the cowboy mentality of riding the range and the wild west. Civilazation is growing by leaps and bounds and there are more and more electronic tools for tracking and monitoring driver movement so breaking the law and making a clean get away is quickly shrinking. I wish you luck, but be mindful of your actions. You are an adult and to quote Murphy's Law: If anything can or will possibly go wrong....It will. John Q. "If men were angels...No government would be necessary." 51st Federalist Papers"If men were angels...No government would be necessary." 51st Federalist Papers "Nichols' Fourth Law says, "Avoid any action with an unacceptable outcome" Answer: Do you still live at home with your parents? If so then to a certain extent you should respect their feelings and house rules. On the other hand if you are living on your own, paying your own bills, etc then the decision really is your 100%. You are legally an adult. In either case what you may want to do is sit down and have an adult conversation with your parents. Listen to all their concerns, and tell them your views on the subject. It may also help to have your friend present so he can help you explain the pro's and cons of being on the road. Whatever you do. Please do not drop out of school, even if you do go on the road over the summer and the bug bites you even harder. Get that degree so you will have soemthing to fall back on if you do enter trucking full time. I will always be a mutter trucker at heart. Answer: Sorry about all of the mistakes, it has been a very stressful week. Thanks for the input John Q., I knew most all of that and as far as living with my parents, I do live with them during the summer. I have my own place at school, but when i go home i stay with them. DOnt worry about me dropping out, I have came this far and i dont intend on quitting now. I agree with needing to sit down and talking with them. I was just wondering what type of obsticles you all went through if any. Thanks again! Pepper Aint no feelin...like cow mobilin...
