Winter Clothing for trucking
Question:
I've seen inquiries in the past about "What are those?"........refering to winter clothes.
No matter what type of trucking you do, whether it's flatbed, van, tank, dump.........whatever. You WILL find yourself out in the nastiest weather you can imagine.
You might just have to jump out and open the doors or you may have to chain up or throw a tarp.......either way, snowballs will be hittin you in the backside sometime in the next few weeks, Yeah, that time of year sucks.
Anyways, here's what I have in the truck for winter;
***NOTE*** The links for Carhartt only take you to the Carhartt webpage, NOT to the individual item. Once you get to the Carhartt site, click on "Product Finder"
Carhartt Coat
Carhartt Bib Overall
Removable hood
Mickey Mouse Boots
I also have a couple pair of insulated leather work gloves.
I also have a pair of 'rubberized' gloves that I use for fueling only.
Always have at least 2 pair of work gloves, that way if you get one pair wet, they can be drying out while you're still working.....wearing the other pair of course.
Dig deep! The items listed aren't cheap, but they are sure a bargain when you're not freezing your azz off.

Answer:
When I have to work in s***ty weather, I usually just have on a pair of jeans and a long sleeve t-shirt, then toss on a pair of insulated coveralls with three layers of socks and my boots. Works good.

Answer:
I've got to get a pair of those bib-overalls. Warm clothes will be a must very soon. For us Southerners their already a must in most northern places.
If your pulling a reefer it's a good idea to keep a warm jacket in the truck all the time. Winter or summer. You'll find yourself inside cold storage warehouses often. It gets real cold being in them for an hour or two with no jacket on.
"There is just something about fresh winter snow and a river. The day is bright even if it is cloudy, the water is friendly even if it is cold and the fish are there even if they are not biting."

Answer:
In terms of warm clothing for the winter I firmly believe in the layering approach. Layering allows you to adjust your clothing for a wide variety of conditions you will hit when on the road.
3/4 length outershell with attached hood. This was made out of GORTEX and was windproof / waterproof. I wear this one year round... cool, rain, snow, etc. I keep a wool hat in one pocket that is handy if the head starts freezing up. Keep in mind you will lose 50% of your heat through your head if it is uncovered.
First inner layer is a fleece jacket. I have two of these, one for the really cold Canadian winters and the other for the milder weather in the States you folks down there call winter.
The next layers varied, but usually consisted of a shirt (flannel in cool weather) and t-shirt under that. Makes it easy to peel down to the t-shirt for driving and still be decent but not encumbered with the heavier materials while driving.
As for boots, I used to wear waterproof hiking boots with a good tread year round and bring along a steel-toes and sport shoes. Usually wore 2 pairs of socks in the winter.
I get my stuff here: http://www.mec.ca/
And continue to even though I no longer drive truck... I don't like being cold & wet!
If was gonna get real dirty, I'd remove the outer shell and put on the oversized insulated overalls

Answer:
Thank you Hoss!!! This is an awesome post. this is what i've been looking for like wear do you get all this rugged clothing for below freezing temps. cool. thanks.

Answer:
Walls Industries
Walls makes the same type of winter wear, but it's usually 1/3 LESS that what Carhartt sells for.
Visit the links on the URL I provided. There's gotta be one of those retailers near you.

Answer:
I went to a Farm & Fleet store and baught a pair of Carhart knock offs called Walls---I belive you can also get them at Wal-Mart.
They are just as warm and less than half the price.
Insulated Bib Overalls (Walls): $40
Insulated Matching Coat w/Hood: $35
If you are anything like me; hands and feet are the biggest concern.
I have some freezer gloves (rubber coated) that I got from an IBP meat plant, and I never ever skimp on quality boots---Cabelas has the best selection of boots that will keep your feet toasty, but you will pay!

Answer:
I usually only have Carharts. I like their stuff, and don't mind paying a little extra for them.
Seeing that I am home weekley, I dont carry much in the way of clothing. I just have what gets me through the week.
I usually have 2 pairs of blue jeans with flannel innerliners, some long sleve flannel shirts, and a winter jacket that I bought with the company name on the back. I also have regular steel toed boots and some heavy duty warm socks. And of course I have regular t-shirts and blue jeans and regular socks. I also have 2 thick work gloves.
While its not clothing, its a wise investment to pick up a good heavy duty sleeping bag, just in case you get stranded.
For flatbedding, you might want long underware as well, and maybe one of those face masks as well. Im sure if you went to a store and checked out their clothing department, you would find all that you need.

Stuffs: I was going to give you some serious grief till I went back and looked and saw something along the line of "swamprat" I wear shorts and a tee shirt in coolers all the time, although I have been accused of being part penquin
If you want to be really warm, spend the bucks for polar weight nomex coveralls. I have a pair with a matching 3/4 length parka. I've never been able to keep 'em both zipped up, even when it's -40 and windy. Walls and Carharts both do ok if you get one size up so you can layer underneath.
And keep 'em in the truck from Oct.-Apr! They might just save your rear when "It was a dark and stormy night!"(apologies to Snoopy)
'no static, no static at all...'XM !!!

Answer:
You can buy them made with Gortex, pricey though
Red linered Carharts better suited for constantly moving around/ working
Black linered Carharts (also known as Artic lined) better suited for lower movement in the cold, examples: lots of standing, operating heavy equipment, or extreme temps(North Dakota, etc)
Non-lined: good durable over wear
