Look BEFORE you leap!
Question:
I was having dinner at the Flying J in Birmingham AL last night. I had my laptop out and was surfing TruckNet.
An older couple stopped by my booth while on their way to the salad bar. They started asking questions like;

  • Can you keep logs on a llaptop now?
  • How much do you make? (I never did answer that one......because it's nobodys' business but mine
  • What's the best route from KC to Orlando?
  • Etc.............

Then they went on to say that they will be buying their own truck in a couple months. I asked if they had a decent company to lease on with, what rates were they gonna be making per mile, flat rate or percentage, and if they had some sort of a business plan.
They both gave me that "deer in the headlights" look.
As to the rate, running team like they do now, they get $1400 to go from KC to Orlando and back.
I asked how long they had been driving. They never did answer, but from the questions they DIDN'T ask, I take it they haven't been driving very long at all.
Last words out of her mouth were, "My husband has always wanted to drive a truck, so we're going to buy our own and make money."
All I can say is, BEWARE! Trucking is a dog eat dog world and YOU are the one wearing 'milk-bone underwear'!
Think BEFORE you dive in the shark infested waters!
You wouldn't jump off a diving board into a empty swimming pool, would you?
Sheesh..................THINK PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

Answer:
Hoss, I was at the same Flying J last week. Picked up a Cobra 29 WX NW ST Night Watch with Soundtracker. I use it to pass the time driving to and from work in Birmingham. Plus when I retire from the Army and start driving in March I'l already have a good CB.
FYI on the Construction zone on I-20/59. Project is a month and a half behind. According to the local news its should be complete by 2008. Why so long puzzles me.
Stay safe out there.
