New to Trucking and could use some advice.
Question:
I'm getting ready to retire from the Army and planning to give trucking a try. I've been reading the newbie forum for a while and from what I see,"ROEHL" may be a good company to start with. I was planning on attending a college in West Memphis for truck driving school. I was going to pay for the school myself so I would'nt have to stay with a company that I did'nt like for a year. But opon reading ROEHL's home site, it looks like they will put you through school themselves. Also the college sent me an application for a company called "PAM" Any help would be helpful. Thanks P.S. I plan on living in Tennessee when I retire, is there any other companies that you would recommend that will take on newbies? Answer: Is a good area to live in as far as trucking companies hiring out of. Some companies for you to check out: Roehl: You know about this one a bit Millis: Decent company but you must attend thier school if you have less than 1 year experence Willis Shaw Express: Can attend company sponsored school or independant program. PAM tranport: Same as Willis Shaw Express Crete: Must either attend company school or have an independant school pre approved before enrollment. Trans AM: Accepts students from many independant schools. Call them to make sure the school you will be attending meets hiring criteria. All of these companies have web sites available and I believe hire from the area you plan on living in. Most of these companies have also been discussed in depth and if you use the search feature at the top of the web page you can find a lot of info available. Also available is a lot of info for your reading pleasure in regards to what to expect during training, questions to ask a recruiter, so on and so forth. Of course you are always free to ask any speific questions you may have. Welcome to Trucknet. I will always be a mutter trucker at heart. Answer: Thanks for the advice Uturn. I'll look up the companies using search. Answer: And when you get here welcome to Tennessee.. As far as going to school you might also want to check to see if you can get into school with the military paying... Another member here at trucknet was able to get into a school in Va. and got it super cheap because he also just got out of the military.. Not sure what area you plan on moving to in Tn. But it is a very good traffic lane for most companies.
