Making life on the road more tolerable.
Question:
Being a truck driver can be a rather lonely exsistance, and at times very boring. While driving the big rigs can be fun, it can get in your blood and all in all make it hard for you to picture yourself ever doing anything else, the fact is that soemtimes the truck can get very small, the miles can drag some days, and you can still finding yourself wanting to scream. To help keep yourself from going totally stir crazy there are some things you can do to make things a bit better. 1. Keep your truck clean, especially the inside. If your truck gets messy, cluttered, unorganized this can cause depression, aggravation, etc. By keeping your truck neat and clean you can make it a place that is, at the very least, tolerable to live in if not a place you want to be. If the outside of your truck is getting to look particularly nasty ask, beg for a truck wash. Also keeping your truck clean will help keep you busy during those down times when you have nothing to do. 2. Get out of that truck once in a while and seek out some human company. Go into the resteraunt and sit at the bar even if just for a soda or cup of coffee and try striking up a conversation with other drivers. Even just being around others can help ease the feeling of isolation you can get. 3. Keep in contact with your loved ones at home at regular intervals. 4. If you are the type who likes to talk then get yourself a good CB radio and antenna system. If you are the type who really loves music or talk radio then an XM radio may be the right way to go. Also audio books can be a great way to help pass the miles and make it feel like there is someone there in the truck with you. 5. Dont let problems go unsolved or unconfronted. If you have aproblem, no matter how small it may seem, address it now not later. If you wait it can build and eat away at you and you will end up making a mountain range out of a grain of sand. 6. Dont dwell on the negatives. Think about the positives. Also do not let yourself become entangled in other peoples negativity. I will always be a mutter trucker at heart. Answer: Yes! #4---Satelitte radio is the best thing to happen to trucking in a while. The worst? Long waiting time at shippers/recievers. Answer: The biggie for me was getting away from all things truck related... When I worked in an office, if I had to sleep & work in my cubicle 24 hrs/day it would drive me nuts... I used to find 7 hrs/day bad enough. So, if parked at a truck stop where there were other places to go within walking distance... I'd go. For example up in Ontario Canada there is a Flying J at Napanee on the 401 between Montreal & Toronto. The town, albeit small, is within walking distance of the truck stop. This used to do me a world of good to get away from the truck stuff for a while. Answer: Things that I have done. If I am in a town where I have contacts, I make it a point to meet up with them. This gives you a chance to get out of the truck and away from the environment all together. I also have gone to watch movies at a theater while out on the road. I have had several stops that I had to shut down over night at that were close to a mall. I would walk over and watch a movie and just hang out in the mall for a bit. Of course I also have my laptop, xm, and cb. Another thing I enjoy is reading books. DRIVER BY CHOICE Buzzdog Answer: . Dont let problems go unsolved or unconfronted.
