Essential Tools
Question:
Im tryin to put togather a sensible set of tools to carry with me. Aside from a hammer, phillips and regular screwdriver and Pliers, is thier any other tools that would be handy that I cant think of? I don't wanna carry my entire tool box, but also want to know I have what I need. Wont be doing any major repairs as the truck is a co. truck.
Thanks for the advice in advance, all inputs are welcome.
Ike

Answer:
torx head scredrivers short prybar roll of ducktape spare lights flashlight electrical tape vice grips and a 1" rachet tie down

Answer:
I would strongly suggest a pair of regular vice grip pliers along with the specialize set of Vice Grip pliers... these ones have what appears to be a chain saw chain or bicycle drive chain where the jaws are normally located. They are invaluable for gripping around pipes or clamping off stuff anywhere the original clamp may have broken.
Get a large set of calipers. You never know when a brake chamber will go south and you'll need to tell the repair guys what size replacement to bring along. Measure the diameter of the chamber, they can figure out what size to bring even if you don't have the chart or have this stuff memorized.
Duct tape... carry a roll of the stuff. It can fix a lot of things to keep you rolling down the road.
I've just mentioned a coupla items... I'm sure the others will mention many more.

Answer:
Duct tape
Vise Grips
Multi head screwdriver (slot, phillips, torx bits)
two 6 inch or (1) 6 inch and one large crescent wrench. make sure they are high quality.
hammer
12 inch or larger pry bar
WD 40 or soemthing similar.
bailing wire
wire cutters
utility knife or a sharp pocket knife
Personally I wouldnt worry about calipers, or one of those chain clamps as a company driver. If you run into a situation where something like that would come in handy just tell them to send a tow truck.
I will always be a mutter trucker at heart.
Answer:

Answer:
Haha, yeah tell them to send a tow truck while you wait beside the road for free.
Been there, done that... and after that I bought the calipers and chain vice grips.
This is kinda the same as keeping the truck clean. I'd like it clean, but I won't pay for keeping the exterior clean with my own dime. I will keep the interior spotless with my own dime.

Answer:
If the company had equipment so crappy it broke down so often I had to carry tons of crap around I wouldn't drive for them, if it comes to that. I didn't go to truck repair and trailer repair school, but I did drive for companies where breakdowns weren't anything I needed to worry about.

Answer:
Last company asked me if I had tools...
I said yes they are right here... pointing to my hands and eyes.
The safety guy was dumbfounded.
I went on to explain that... dammit I'm a driver not a mechanic!

Answer:
Thanks for the input and advice. Dont get me wrong, The equipment is top notch. And DD that was funny, but I just wanted to make sure I didn't get caught without the most basic of nessecities. looks like a Hammer, Duct tape, Vice grips, Pry bar, wire cutters and a set of drivers, torx, flat tip and phillips.
Thanx Drivers.

Because that don't have anything to do with 'Gourmet Cooking On The Big Road', and wouldn't make for a big fun Shop Til You Drop fling gathering up 3 tons of crap for The Big Camping Trip. This is the Fantasy Island Forum.
They want stuff that has chrome on it and will look cool on their 724 pocket web gear and utility belt that tells the world 'I'm Ready For Anything, DAMMIT!!!!!'
I wonder why nobody mentioned Preparation H.

For Winter Drving you'll want to ADD:
Small shovel
Rock Salt or Kitty Litter
Extra Blankets/sleeping bag
Emergency Food Box(peanut butter/crackers, canned tuna/sardines, canned soup, canned vienna sausages,pork-n-beans, canned chili, energy bars, bottled water,cig-lighter/sterno can, etc.)

Answer:
A pair of tin snips for cutting door seals.
Since I own my truck, I have a full set of wrenches & sockets up to 1", screw drivers, torx drivers, hammer, pipe wrench, hacksaw, sharp hunting knife, 12v. cordless drill with drill bits and a complete driver set.
Along with all the other need to have stuff.
After I had a "pancake" go bad on me a few weeks ago, I bought a full set of brass plugs that fit air lines, from 1/8" up to 5/8". I also carry an assortment of wiring accessories, screws, bolts, nuts, hose clamps, extra altenator belts and a "air to air" clamp.
If I can fix it myself or "Jerry rig it" so I can get to a shop, I'll do it! It sure beats the hell out of waiting for the road service truck to show up and rape my wallet.
Some day, I'll have an extra alternator and starter in the side box also.
