1956 - Founded by CL Werner with one truck. 1960s - Terminal built in Council Bluffs. 1965 - Werner Enterprises had a fleet of 10 trucks offering personal and high quality service. 1969 - Werner picked blue color for it's trucks, with purchase of a 1969 Freightliner. Company logo was developed shortly thereafter. 1970 - 35-40 flatbed trucks with removable sides, hauled grain, soybean meal, lumber, potatoes, onions. 1971 - Werner got the first 7 van trailers, hops trailers and painted a dark blue. 1977 - Werner Enterprises moves from Council Bluffs, IA to Omaha, NE and builds a 30,000 square foot terminal on 5 acres. The company had a fleet of 100 trucks. 1981 - Computers used in the office for the first time. 1986 - Werner completed its initial public offering in June 1986 with a fleet of 630 trucks. 1992 - Installed satellite communications on trucks. Temperature Controlled Division formed. 1995 - Paperless Log Initiative. 1998 - June, Paperless log system approved by DOT. 1999 - Exceeded growth goal of over 7,000 trucks, 18,000 trailers, 8,500 drivers and exceeded $1 billion in revenue . 2000 - January, started Mexico operations. 2000 - March, Transplace.com alliance. 2001 - Werner Enterprises was the most profitable public trucking company (truckload carriers or less-than-truckload carriers) in the United States for 2001. Answer: Yup, they're big and reportedly successful. You can wind up with a jackass for a trainer (you drive FORWARD with lots of night shifts, they take the day shift and do all the backing); and you can wind up with a jackass for a dispatcher (can't remember what part of the country you call home and gives you lots of p/u's at 5 pm, deliver by 6 am loads.) On the plus side they take care of their trucks. Be sure to audit your pay closely. If you live on the West coast, don't dispatch out of Omaha, use one of their West coast branches (used to be Denver for the West). Of course, it's always too small but I've never heard one driver (or poster here at trucknet) complain that they were dishonestly shorted pay at Werner. There are several western divisions. Vans, flatbed, and several dedicated western-regional divisions (Office Max, Sears...) Random dispatch western vans are MOSTLY dispatched from Phoenix, flatbed is MOSTLY dedicated from Denver, Office Max (huge account) is dedicated out of Las Vegas, and some other dedicated western divisions are dispatched from Omaha. Then, there are some odd-ball dedicated that are dispatched out of the diapstcher's home on their pc. Note: One of the best gigs for Werner's western company drivers is the Office Max account. Flat 31-cpm (deadhead and loaded) regardless of seniority. But you've got to live in the right place. Drivers living in Las Vegas on that account bump their seventy every week....just before they get home every weekend. Some single guys have relocated to Vegas to get on that deal -- all preloaded, no-touch. Very tightly scheduled, no room to mess-up your paperless logs (etc) so they're pretty selective. Answer: Just some minor questions: What year did they decide to govern down their trucks? What year did they decide to be a training company with a low pay scale? What year did they decide to be a cut rate shipper, quantity versus quality. There's a lot more to know about a company when deciding to work there than their history.
