Welcome to Live Dialogue !!!

newbies, how would you handle this?
Question:
Now I drove for over a year and had to deal with these situations and knew how to handle it, but how many of you know?
Steer tire blowout, yes they do happen.
(1) Do you brake, apply steering correction and get off the road safely asap.
(2) Do you give it fuel, apply your steering correction, then look for a safe place to park it.
One more question... with a governed tractor why is it not a good idea to always run up against the governor?

Answer:
Steer tire blow out you jump in the sleeper as fast as you can.
Can't run up aginst the governor any more. It's all electronic now days.
But on a seriouse I know what to do. They dont teach it in school. At-least not most schools.

Answer:
It'll be interesting to see the responses, that's for sure. The school I went to did teach the procedure of a steer tire blowout. Thank God I've never had to use it yet.

Answer:
Yeah, we've all seen the michelin video hosted by Ole Blue.

Answer:
Apparently not too many know the answers... as of a few minutes ago 3 replies as compared to 65 views.
Looks like a lot of folks want to know the answer. That is a good sign.

Answer:
I was always taught to "gas it, steer it, find a safe place". As for the govern....hmmm, I'm just learning but I'm guessing the same, electronics maybe?

Answer:
"but I'm guessing the same, electronics maybe?" No no thats not the answer. Thats a pun more or less. There is a very good reason not to hold you truck at top speed or against the governor. There is something you just cant do if your at full throttle.

Answer:
The answer for the tire is the 2nd one. Since you never want to brake, unless unavoidable.
I am sitting here thinking about the governor, and the only thing I can think of is.. if you have the truck full throttle your not going to be able to speed up if you need to for some reason as your already going your max speed. I am most likely wrong. But hell I am not a driver of trucks yet...just cars and school buses.

Answer:
Well I was coming back empty on a two lane road after having delivered a dozer blade on my lowboy when my left front steer tire blew. There is a lot of truck traffic on this road and as luck would have it there was another truck coming toward me and he saw it happen.I was going 65 and I got out of the throttle and pulled it back to my lane as it jumped about 6 inches over the line when it blew.I then eased onto the side while gently applying the brakes by this time doing about 45 mph and eased it to a stop. Some people say dont use brakes but it worked fine for me and as I was coming up on a curve it seemed like a good idea.Seemed like forever.About two minutes actual time.Other driver asked if I was OK and I checked my seat and said yeah.He then proceeded to thank me for not killing him.I had my cell phone and called back to the shop and 6 hours later the morons showed up with a tire and wheel.I walked back down the road while waiting and picked up gators so the other drivers wouldnt have to dodge them.I dont really know if I did it by the book but we both lived and there was no major damage.Im just glad it didnt happen while I had that bigass blade on the back.

Answer:
I was thinking about that video and wondered if the truck twisted as bad in 10th gear as it does in low under a load. So with 40K on the back I gave the old 3406 the loud signal and it did. It wasn't quite as profound as it is in low, but it still does it.
Now what if that right front tire goes and I tromp on the accelerator?

Answer:
The first action is to get the truck under control.
To do that, you fuel up and apply your steering correction at the same time. This should almost happen within the blink of an eye. Once under control start scanning for a safe place to pull it over.
As for the governor, if you are constantly up against it there is only one direction you can move... downwards & slower. What if you are in a situation where you need to gain speed? Can't do it can you with fueling and holding all the way to the governor.

Answer:
Not ryin to start an argument, but why in the world would you accelerate with a blown steer?, I was taught (not that this is the correct answer) to get off the fuel until your at a safe speed then ease on the brakes and pull off the road.

Answer:
For those that don't understand the blow out video link is below. If a steer tire bows your center of gravity shifts to the blown tire. If you brake right away you push more weight and force on that tire. You effectivly make the problem worse. Accelerating shifts the gravity back and literally picks up on the front end of the truck to some extent. Taking the force off the blown tire. It allows you a little more time to correct the problem and steer safely to a stop.

Answer:
No one knows what they would do being that is so unexpected. I would never drive a governed truck up to the limit.
I saw the video and I too would accelerate.
