Even if you have done a complete pretrip a short time before take a moment to stop shortly before it gets dark and recheck ALL the lights on your vehicle to make sure they are working. Also be sure to recheck your pigtail (the wire that connects your tractor to your trailer to provide power to lights) to make sure it is still fully seated and secure.
Also while your are driving at night and while you are checking your mirrors look for the glow from your tailights reflecting on the pavement behind you. If your mirrors are clean and it is dark behind you you should be able to see them. If something seems amiss stop and check it out. Even if it is only imagination it is worth the extra minute to ensure the safety of those around you and your safety as well.
