Making lane changes
Question:
When making a lane change you need to ALWAYS carefully check your mirrors and if you are not 200% sure it is safe for you to make the change then stay centered in your current lane. Even if the truck behind you has "flashed" his lights to let you "know" it is OK to come over be sure to check your mirrors. You never know. What you thought was a flash may have been something else. The reason I bring this up is that last night I passed a truck and about the time I start looking to see if I had cleared him I seen it go dark behind me. What I first thought was a flash turned out to be a headlight going out on the other truck and if I hadnt looked carefully before merging back into the right lane I would have turned his conventional into a cabover. I will always be a mutter trucker at heart. Answer: You never know. What you thought was a flash may have been something else. Right on uturn. Also, if the truck you are passing hits a bump, it can make it appear as though they flashed the brights. (which should never be done, BTW) Answer: I watched one socalled professional put some 4wheeler out into a corn feild. The 4wheeler was probably going 15mph faster than the truck and though it didn't have time to wait for the truck to return to the right lane,so it tried passing on the right, the truck driver didn't signal or check the mirrors to well. Check left mirror for traffic behind you, they seem to hang left to try and push trucks back over to the right.Than check right mirror and if clear signal, check mirror again and slowly start moving right, give them a chance to back out of their plan to get pass on the right.Don't make quick moves. Try and avoid changing lanes on overpass's with no breakdown lanes, they have no place to avoid you if you don't see them.At least with a shoulder, they have room to get out of the way. Don't return to the right lane when an onramp is merging, you may miss some idiot way over to the right outside the veiw of your mirror.Your going right, they are going left, your both going into the same lane ------------------------- Fundamental truth in Trucking "We over pay our poor drivers and under pay our good drivers" http://www.truckload.org/infocenter/TCAdocs/profitable_driver.pdf Answer: I just stay out of the left lane all together. Unless there is an obstruction or some sort of traffic emergency in the right, I am staying in it. Answer: I was taught by a good friend and trainer. He has been a OTR for Willis Shaw for alot of years and been driving for 30+ years all together. One thing he pounded in my thick skull was to never jerk, go easy and constant mirror watch. You never know, you'll be on ice pretty soon and a accident is in the right lane and you have to merge. How are you gonna do it safely? Use your head and don't jerk, don't go fast, forget the other big trucks that intimidate you and fly around you. They will be on the side of the mountain 5 miles ahead of you making you late for your delivery because that wreck was preventable. Peace and Goodwill Answer: One thing I learned....Truckers flash their lights to give you the"ok" to move over. Four wheelers flash you in a fit if rage and a way to say "what the FK are you doing you dumb azz trucker?" Answer: Either way, wether it's a trucker or a 4 wheeler that flashes the lights at you, LOOK IN YOUR MIRRORS BEFORE YOU MOVE OVER! Make damn sure you have enough distance between you and the guy you just passed. I've seen many a driver flash the lights just as the back end of my trailer gets 3" past his front bumper. Had a driver do that very same thing to me the other day, then get mad because I didn't move over right away. He got on the radio and said, "Damn driver, I gave you the lights!" (followed by some choice 4 letter words when I didn't move over immediately) I grabbed my mic and told him that he didn't need to cuss me and that I don't need him to read me the numbers off the seal on my back doors either. ******************************* "Got the bird dog on... Many I see flash at me are telling me their there and in a hurry, don't come over. It's also a form of road rage for many of them. I never pay attention to their flashes. I just make sure I'm am clear of them before changing my lane. "There is just something about fresh winter snow and a river. Answer: "The 4wheeler was probably going 15mph faster than the truck and though it didn't have time to wait for the truck to return to the right lane,so it tried passing on the right, the truck driver didn't signal or check the mirrors to well." Saw something like that the other day and i don't know what happened cos i didn't see all of it but a truck was trying to get back in the right lane when it smacked into a little car that was already there. I don't know if the truck was passing the car and tried to get back over way to early or if the car tried to pass on the right but the truck hit it with the cab. I've never been in a truck but is it hard to see a car when it is beside your passsenger side door?
