Beelman it is!!!
Question:
Daytrader,
I graduate school on the 21st of October and start with Beelman on the 22nd. I am on their "dirt account."
Kyle said that I would be hauling contaminated soil from wherever to Michigan. If I am not doing that I could go anywhere around the midwest. He said 4 state area. The on-call thing I guess isn't gonna go so he asked if I would do the dirt account. Do you know anything about it?
After I get my year in I will either stay with them or go onto Roehl or wherever.
Oh yea, a guy in our CDL class said he would not go to Roehl because they have red trucks. Some people I will never understand.

Answer:
I wasn't aware that Beelmans took rookie drivers.
You would go somewhere else and pass up the opportunity to drive local for them??
@#*!%$^@!
Answer:
I have 6 years military experience in the Air Force driving all assorted trailers and tractors. I chose Beelman over Roehl, Riechmann, and anyone else because they took into account that I have done this before and am not just another newbie.
If I stay happy at Beelman then I will stay there but if not after a year alot more doors will open.
This is regional, so companies will see that I just didn't drive local and take that into consideration later.
I start the 22nd and am with another guy until Friday. After Friday I get my own Mack Vision assigned to me and am on my own.
Before anyone says that it isn't enough time for training, I have pulled jet engines in the winter and have 50,000 miles of driving primarily on I-95 while I was stationed at Pope AFB. We would go to various drop zones to recover airdrop platforms. We were going to a drop zone in New Jersey and took 2 C-130 engines up with us for one of our C-130s that was broke up there. So I have experience but just needed a CDL to make it legal.
I know no one said that I need more training but with the way the negativity flows here I figured I would beat someone to the punch.

OK, so you are not a complete rookie. Makes a difference.
I guess you really desire OTR, as opposed to local work?

Actually, the negativity around here is mild compared to what you will find when dealing with other truckers on the road!
But as you are ex military, I know you can hack it!

Answer:
Beelman is a good company. They turn down a lot of drivers. Many otr types could not get their foot in the door. They have grow a lot. I remember when they were just a small grain hauling firm out of Carlyle. You will prob like it. Many new drivers find after 6-12 months the grass has to be greener so go on to a different company. This happens anywere you go. They do have a ton of local jobs in our area. In time you may find one open for you if you want it. The slag and coal hauling they do is great work. What are they going to have you haul to Michigan? They have a large lime account in Missouri. If you haul that up and dirt back you will prob do ok. Will you be off on the weekends? Most of their drivers are. Not sure but at 25% you will prob do about 32-35 cents per mile. Not to bad for first road job. Good luck.202 N Main Street

Answer:
I will haul contaminated soil, dirt with diesel or other hazardous stuff in it. Kyle said that it wasn't anything real bad just a class 9 misc. hazard.
I am not sure yet of my off days as of yet. I hope it is weekends off but I will not push it starting out.
I am really looking forward to going there and can't wait to get out of school and start making some money again. The wifey is getting pissy about it.

OK, got it.
The last time my wife got pissy about my lack of work, I took a job that kept me out 3 weeks at a time and home for 2 days afterwards.
She has never griped about any periods of unemployment since then. She now just tells me that there must be a method to my madness and that I must know what I am doing...

Answer:
I don't think I could work a job that kept me out for 2-3 weeks. Call me what you want but that is inhumane to be in a truck more than 2 weeks, IMHO.
But some people do it and if it works for them it works for me.

Same here. If I can't do it monday through Friday, it aint worth doing.
Truck companies are going to have to raise their pay significantly before I'd even conside staying out longer...
but by that time I will have finished my education and will be through with this biz permanently.

Answer:
Check out Colonial in St Louis. They are a great company (also known as drive co). You are home on the weekends. The pay is not to great. 29-32 cents a mile. Talk to Joe over there. I ran for them and the only resone I quit is because as a small company they could not allow drivers anymore. Dang insurance. They will run the hell out of you. That is the only prob I had. 3-4k every week and off on the weekends. Can't be logged, but you will see how it gose.202 N Main Street
