OTR & 12 Step Recovery
Question:
I made this post awhile back in the spiritual cafe, as i thought it was the apropriate place. I now post it here as I think it will get a little more exposure.
I'd like to know if any of you drivers are in recovery or know someone who is. I'm a month on the road now, and still trying to adjust. It is every bit the lifestyle change I thought it would be. I've been in recovery for almost 5 yrs. now, and finding it quite the process of altering my program from how I've been working it over the years.
Not really sure what I'm looking for. Maybe just someone to identify with. Starting to feel a little alone in this regard. I know I'm not the only driver dealing with this issue. Anything anyone has to offer would be appreciated. How you deal with it, what things you do, anything.
Thank You

Answer:
My sister is recovered over 15yrs and still attends meetings regularly. This must be tough OTR. My advice would be to look for people like me at the terminals and truckstops because I talk to everyone. Have met many recovering alcoholics traveling 48 and would always listen when they wanted to talk. I just like people. When your feeling down or lonely JUST FIND SOMEONE TO TALK TO... sometimes you find that their blue mood or lonelyness is greater than yours and if you can contribute something good to their day by default you leave feeling that much better.
Be safe and prosperous!

E-Mail sponsor or something. It may not be the greatest thing in the world, but hey its something. I also belive their are drivers out there with many the same demons you have, and I wish you all the best of luck.
Just had a buddy that went through treatment, and attends NA meetings frequently. He is not a driver, but a factory worker, but still calls me when he needs strength as I have never used that kind of substance. Thats the joy of being local for me, I am still close to all my friends and have an active social life.
Sure, I drink, but that doesnt mean I am going to push it on anyone. It also doesnt mean that you are bad, it actually means you are better, in my eyes. You looked the demon right in the eyes and met it face on. I am overjoyed by the success you have had and the success others have had, at least for today.
Continue to be strong, as there are many drivers who will bash you for what you have gone through, when they themselves didnt have the courage.

How about a trucking fantasy vacation
Not sure what to expect?
Well, if your idea of fun includes great food, exciting activities, lavish entertainment, pampering service and discovering exciting new places, you'll find all that on a Trucking "Fun truck" Rooster Cruiser vacation.

Sorry about the thingy.
My computer crashed or something happened. I had a great profound paragraph and that was all that came thru.
Reread the 164 pages of the bigbook. Use this time to work you're program and work the steps. Like the old timers said to me, "If you have to run from meeting to meeting to stay sober then you don't have a program." You can find some Good sobriety on the road. KEEP THE FAITH.

Thank you all. I appreciate the reminder cigar. I know mtgs. don't equal recovery. They are just one part of it. However it has been my experience that when one stops going to mtgs. one goes back out. You are most definately right that the steps are where the real healing is at. I am glad for all those that responded. I also liked the idea about the e-mail sponsor. My trainer will have a computer on the truck soon so this may be another good option. As I said, I guess I was mostly looking for someone to identify with. I know this is an issue for all walks of life so it is my wish that this post helps more than just me.

Answer:
I'm almost afraid to answer that cigar, since they have such a bad rep. around here. I'm starting off with RTC. Going to put some time in and possibly go with Prime. I'm not looking to start up another Prime bashing session. I've read all the past posts, so I consider myself warned.

Got my 20 yr chip in my pocket. It can be hard OTR. Lonely and having too much time to think are the worst enemies of those of us in recovery.
There are directories available through your GSR that list meetings all over the nation. There usually are folks who will come out to where you parked to take you to meetings and back.
Hang in there and work your program.

Answer:
Welcome maxmiddle and hello to you. Thanks for the suggestion on the directory. I ordered one from the NA world service office. However I ordered it to late to get it before I hit the road. So now as soon as I get routed home, whenever that might be, I'll be in good shape. It's good to hear that some will be willing enough to pick you up for a mtg. That is encouraging. I talked to my trainer about my situation and he said that we could try and trip plan for mtgs. Once a week or as possible. How many of those 20yrs have been spent on the road? Thanks

Answer:
How many of the 20 spent on the road? Most of them. I try not to sponsor folks since I am gone so much. One of the fellas I sponsor hits meetings on the road. He uses his directory. Most meetings (not all mind you) will have people willing to come out and pick you up.
One day at a time. Sometimes one mile at a time. You can do it.
Good luck and good trucking.
