A lesson learned the hard way.
Question:
We here at HE had a driver arrested and terminated yesterday. Seems he had a load going to a grocery warehouse. Seems he also called OS&D (Over Short and Damaged) about several damaged boxes of merchandise. Most all of it was ice cream cones. Well OS&D called the grocery warehouse to confirm. They then, the grocery people, went out to take a look. Seemed one box was damaged and the rest was ok. They let the driver leave without question. The driver then went to the house for the weekend. His home is 180 or so miles from the warehouse. The unfortunate thing for him is a Loss Prevention Manager from the grocery place followed him home. The driver feeling he was in the clear proceeded to carry all but the one damaged box into his home. The loss prevention guy photographed it all. The driver was to take the damageged box or boxes to a terminal but he decided to keep most of it. He is now in jail or could be released by now but he was arrested for the theft. He also has lost his job and will have the incident on his permanent record. His career is over for the most part. I am sure when this driver started like most stealing was not in his plans. But, the opportunity is there for drivers and can be easily abused. So this driver took advantage of what seemed to be easy. Who knows he may have even done it before. But this type of theft I am told is a felony. So now he's done. As new drivers things will come up that although wrong can be and are often to easy to pass up. What a dumba$$. He deserved to get canned. I can just see it-"so what are you in for?" --> Answer: There is a right way and wrong way to go about it. What this driver did was the wrong way for sure. If you have product that is damamged and your company tells you to take it somewhere then you take it there, and get some kind of delivery reciept for that product. (This can be a simple as making out a new BOL or even having the original one signed.....personally I do both). However if your company tells you to take it somewhere and throw it away then you are pretty much free to do with it what you want. However one word of advice on this. Do not take it to the truckstop 5 miles down the road and start selling it. This can lead you into trouble in a hurry. (Also some companies have very strict policies against selling OS&D. While they dont mind you taking it for yourself when told to throw it away if they get wind of you selling it you can be in very hot water.) Stuffs....Good post there Pal. --> --> --> I will always be a mutter trucker at heart. _________________ One cylinder at a time... Answer: "A warehouse cop made a 6 hour trip over a few boxes of ice cream cones" Well Fatty Turnbuckle I gues if you understood that 100's of thousands worth of little things are stolen each year from warehouses you might understand. Today it was ice cream cones. How about the last time he was there or the next time he goes there. Theft not only cost these places alot of money. You and I also get to pay for it at the register. I have a feeling they would have followed him for even less. It's somerthing to think about. Is it worth it? "There is just something about fresh winter snow and a river. The day is bright even if it is cloudy, the water is friendly even if it is cold and the fish are there even if they are not biting." _________________ RC Universe Answer: I often have mixed feeling about purchasing the products that I ship, and carrying them on the road with me. For instance, is it better to drink or eat a competitive product while at the dock, or use the customer's product and open yourself to something like the potential described in this thread. To compound this, some of our customers give away (regular sized) "samples" of their products right in the driver's lounge area. I suppose you could keep the receipts with you. Maybe its just me...
