medical waiver ,so you don't have to unload trucks
Question:
i think the name of the company is star transportation out of nashville tn. in their recruitmant brochure they say they will pay for a lumper if a driver has a medical waiver. i have never heard of this before. why would a company hire someone who was unable to unload a truck? the same brochure says the company is 99 % no touch freight. how easy is it to get a medical waiver so you don't have to unload trucks. and if you get one why would any trucking company want to hire you? also while we are on the subject of star transportation in nashville tn., has anyone heard anything about them? i know, go do a search , which is what i'm going to do as soon as i get done writing this post. Answer: I sent off and got my info pack on them and they seem to be a pretty decent company. I have them towards the top of my list. But not at the very top. Answer: If you have sleep apnea and are prescribed one of those breathing apparatus thing-ies. You may be able to get hotel authorization/reimbursement. A driver at the last co. I worked for needs this machine when he sleeps. So he gets to sleep in a hotel every night--paid in full by the company. Needs to be able to plug it in. I'll say one thing about those breather machines--they're pretty damn quiet. (I teamed with him once) "'Tis no man, 'tis a remorseless eating machine, Arr." Captain McAllister on Homer Simpson Answer: It sounds like this company will ONLY pay for lumpers if a doctor's note requires that drivers not unload by themselves. They may have a high percentage of no-touch freight, but they must have situations that require driver unloads that come up somewhat frequently in order to put that in their brochure. There is nothing wrong with doing the work of unloading. It keeps you in shape, and I have unloaded trailers myself. The only problem is that it is very time-consuming and you must log this time on-duty by law, which will burn up hours spent driving and making more money. And if you go to a grocery warehouse, you are much better off with a lumper, believe me. Who wants to break down a 53' trailer filled with pallets of canned vegetables, and separate and stack them according to a customer's requirements? I have seen work like that take a group of experienced lumpers 4 hours. Imagine how long it would take you working alone. Some companies have loads of insulation, another load you don't want to deal with if you can hire a lumper. Personally, I would go with another company if that is the ONLY way they will pay for a lumper. Answer: Not to mention that you'll get the hand pallet jack that is missing some ball bearings in the wheels, and the seals are blown out on the lift so it won't lift the pallet high enough off of the floor to roll freely. And, I've noticed recently that some grocery warehouses give you a time limit to unload the trailer if you unload it yourself. Then, after XX amount of time, they send in the lumpers to unload the rest, and you pay full price, regardless of how much you've done!
