OPINIONS PLEASE
Question:
I got hired with Trans Am. I am supposed to leave by greyhound to Kansas tommorrow. The recruiter told me that by Jan 1st, they will be 100% automatic. He was ecited about it but I wasn't.
Werner prehired me pending that they see my DD214 from the Army. Then I can start with them. Tommorrow I have a road test with CSE in Virginia. Some drivers say that I am ahead of the game if I get something local, but how will local help me if in a few years I will want my own truck?

It won't really, unless you can find a way to run locally with our own truck.
If you want to run your own truck, you need to be a company driver for several years to get a flair for the business.
Many drivers say local is better because you are home every day, and get the assorted benefits of being home every day, like seing your family; sleeping in your own bed; taking regular showers in a clean showers stall; not having to wait in line for that shower; eating home cooked food; not having to pay for eating out every meal; having a life outside of the truck; getting to know your neighbors; getting paid for all work you do; driving in areas that are very familiar to you; having regular hours instead of the wildly varying one of OTR; getting sleep; etc, etc etc.

If you are wanting to be an O/O and do regional or OTR one day then you really need to start out as an OTR driver and get a feel for it, learn the ins and outs, ups and downs and so forth.
I will always be a mutter trucker at heart.

Answer:
If you pass the CSE test and get an offer stay with them. Like Stuffs said they are mostly T/T and doubles; getting doubles experience is a big plus as LTL carriers have better wages and benefits than any OTR carrier is going to offer.
With doubles experience at an LTL carrier you will always be able to get a dweller job, they are no big deal, but getting the experience at CSE will give you many more options than going the OTR dweller route; just look at the mileage pay differences at companies like Saia and Yellow compared to OTR pay with umpteen years of driving experience. You'd be nuts to pass up CSE if you got a chance to go with them vs a OTR dweller outfit.

Answer:
Take "owning a truck" out of the equation for now. You wouldn't want to do that for several years anyway (experience), you can always do some dweller OTR in the future if you want, and in the meantime you may find there's better money and quality of life NOT owning a truck.
