The real reason rest areas are refered to "pickle park" by truckers is:
1)Men's insecurities and/or fear of gay men--can you guess what pickle means now? Of course, in some cases, gay women also frequent these areas. I believe the L.I.E. was one of these areas.
You see Lori, many, certainly not all, gay men (and sometimes women) "cruise" these areas in order to tender a relationship which would probably lead to sexual activity.

wow i had no idea gay truck drivers frequented rest areas. there's a lot of drivers on here who talk about frequenting rest areas because they are quieter than truckstops and no lot lizards just lizards of a different kind...pickle lizards which they find preferable i guess. hoo...that explains a lot.

"Pickle" refers to a man's *****. (did that make it through the censors?) Rest areas closest to large cities usually have more "social activity" than those on long, isolated stretches of interstate (out west). This activity, hookers, hustlers, casual sex, etc, is usually dominated by local residents -- not commercial drivers or tourists.
Although the occasional news story about someone getting shot at a rest area sounds alarming, the fact is; there thousands of folks who park and rest at thousands of rest areas nationwide every day/night. You're probably generally safer parked at any rest area than you are operating your truck on any highway. Watch your surroundings, keep your doors locked and avoid contact with anyone -- same advice for anywhere I suppose.
